i never bothered to wire up the glowplugs when i fitted the tdi to my series, but now its getting really cold i find i am having to crank the engine over for 20 seconds before it fires, so i want to wire them up now.
can anyone tell me how much ampage they draw? i intend to fit a pushbutton in the cab, running a hefty relay that will power the glowplugs. is this a bad idea?

I think it would be better to get the Relay from a 200tdi Disco and use that.
I put a 200tdi into a project and looked into what to do with the Glow plugs. I was warned that if the glow plugs are left on to long, they will be damaged. The standard 200tdi relay has a timer.
If you google Nicksjungle its has the info you will need to make and connect the wiring.

is the standard thingy just a timer?
the vans i drive at work have a timer that seems to change depending on temperature

Its a timer Relay all in one.
If its warm weather then just start the engine before the glow plug light goes out.
in the days of the 200TDI things were basic!

so if i just count to 20 with the button pressed, just like i used to do with my old engine, it wont hurt it

you could do that
