I did this 6 months ago.
The main points of problems we found were..........
1. the top bell housing bolts. To get past it we got ever socket extension we could find and had to slide it over the top of the gearbox etc and have the ratchet come out at the rear of the hand brake mechanism. It took 1 person to undo bolt and another to squeeze fingers down to line up the socket.
Engine hoist. We shortened the strop as short as possible but even so the engine still wouldnt clear the radiator cowlings for air con etc. We had to lower the tyres down to totaly flat and even then had to lift the engine the last half inch or so.
Tools. You will need 2 spanners that arent in a normal spanner set. 17mm and 23 maybe?
Time. It took alot longer than we thought. MY mate helping me has done numerous engine changes in his rrc etc but never a 300tdi and said a 300tdi was the worst he had done.
Bribery. Get some bribes in like beer etc for your neighbours when they come out and help then get told off by thier mrs for getting oily and late for dinner!!

Sound idea - I do it all of the time but with a digital camera. Keep the pics for future reference.
Make sure your hoist will lift the engine high enough.
