Title: crunching into second gear.
Post by: squaddie_fox on December 16, 2008, 17:20:30
i want to make sure i have the right diagnosis before i go out and buy stuff i dont need

when i change from first to second, and occasionaly second to third, in the disco (95' 300tdi manual) it crunches. doesn't happen if i let the revs drop right off. sometimes does it into reverse from standstill aswell. happens in high and low so i cant change quickly when i need to!

thanks in advance.

its the synchro's gone in the gearbox

you could try a different oil, i about to try a 75/90 semi-synthetic in mine, i'll let you know how it goes

or to cure it properly its new/recon box time

Just double declutch mate, I have to do it on first, second and third in my truck, and every single gear change in a certain big olive drab green machine.

Clutch is dragging, the crunching into reverseis the giveaway, coupled with perhaps a weak set of synchros, second usually goes before any otheres.

clutch fork could be about to break free too.... had the gearbox swapped on mine recently, and daylight colud be seen through the ball-hole recess thingy..... (technical term ;) ) would be lucky to have got it home really!

there was an R380 box on the bay not so long back, £180 BIN price, dont think it sold.....

That's a bit steep even for an R380

hmmmm, double-de-clutching on a freddie by any chance  have to do that too!

No, a scammel crusader and the John Deere at the fishery. The JD probably had synchro at some point but it doesn't now.

Its not mine, it belongs to a REME guy, but its sat in the workshop for storage at the moment. It comes in useful for engine changes!
