Title: ive done it now!!
Post by: discotec on December 22, 2008, 18:02:00
ive done it!!!

well i have done somthing ..carnt leave well alone can i!!

i need help if poss after fitting the lift springs and shocks it drove fine for a week etc then today i heard a scaping from front right hand side spring ..

i stoped and oil is leaking from front swivel housing ball on wheel and steering is pulling to lef hand side...also scraping noise when on the move when you turn either way?

can anyone tell me what it is?

my thoughts are that by fitting lift it has put swivel housing balls under pressure and leaked all the grease/ oil out making the spline dry or damaged?

can anyone local help??

I can't imagine the lift having any effect on loadings of the swivel. I suspect the failure is just coinsidence.

There is a seal in the swivel sphere that runs on the drive shaft. If this fails, axle oil can get into the swivel. It's not a huge job to get it apart, but if you've never done it before allow a good few hours.

V8 thanks for the suppor bud but its just that i have no garage to do it in and also i work for myself so get little or no time to have a ago..i am not bad with spanners etc but i just know if i get it on axle stands it will be on the drive for yonks like it and was just after somone who had done i before to make it go quicker..other thing is i have to use the disco for my biz etc i tow a 1.7 ton digger with her and a real bad time for it to go as after xmas the phone will be ringing etc ..can you come and dig my drive out etc...

i dont know wether to strip it myself as i do enjoy doing it etc or run it ino a garage and wondering how much it would cost etc ???..also in my game this time of year thier is little or no work so wrong time all round really finance wise

The back hub seals don't generally fail. If theres a rumbling noise it would indicate that your swivel bearings have collapsed - this allows the seal to move well away from the swivel and the grease to leak out. Replacing the swivel bearings is at least a three hour job if your equipped to do it (it's easier to take the swivel off of the axle).

Now, quick check. Jack up the leaky corner and give the wheel a good shake. Grab the wheel top and bottom and shake. Then grab it at either side and shake. Movement in both top/bottom and side to side indicates a wheel bearing, major movement only top and bottom says its swivel bearings. Major movement side to side indicates a steering joint. That'll be the big teller.

Your problem now will be getting the parts before you need the vehicle - what with it being christmas and all.

Hope that helps.

Given time of year etc I'd hunt around for a complete swivel from someone who is breaking a car and fit that.
