Ok, so a few weeks ago I blanked off my EGR with a plate off the bay. Beforehand I was getting somewhere over 25.5 mpg out of my 300 TDI auto disco, from the last two tanks only getting 22 mpg!! Does that sound right??
I guess I have to de-cat to get it back, yeah??
At least I only paid 97.7 ppl today, in the summer I paid 132.p ppl on three different occasions!!Cheers,

I got 22mpg before and after the EGR blanking and then 22mpg before and after the decat!

I've kept pretty detailed records on an Excel spreadsheet of the fuel consumption I've been getting from my 300Tdi since I bought it. There's no obvious sign - in terms of fuel consumption - of when I removed the EGR system or when I put it back on :-(
What I can see quite clearly is deterioration in the air filter over time and a step improvement from the day it's changed. This is so pronounced I now use the mpg graph to decide when it needs changing :-)

as a project manager at work I find I have an excel spreadsheet to cover most aspects of my personal life as well!!! I had a new air filtered fitted at full service 3,500 miles ago, midsummer, so surely it would not need a new one yet would it???
Bought the car Oct 25th 2007, 18 tanks of fuel at average 25.5 mpg, blank off egr and then two fulltanks at 22.5 and then 21.7. A bit worrying that its still going down.
Just remembered - fitted the steering guard at abou tthe same time but it's not that heavy is it???

Well it won't help.
The EGR and the oil breather combine to fill the inlet manifold with black sludge, try cleaning the intercooler out too. I disconnected the oil breather from next to the turbo and fitted a catch tank, the inlet is still shiney silver a year later.
Still smokes though :-k

When I did mine I didnt notice much of an improvement in MPG, if any but as I dont keep an exact count its hard to tell, (I go off getting 125-130 for the first 1/4 of a tank filled up to the point where the pump clicks off only - nothing more scientific than that really, if it drops below that figure then I know somethings amiss somewhere :) ), but it did stop a slight mis-fire at 2750 RPM and she seemed to pull a bit better too. Mine still smokes (slight pump tweek, as in fuel stop pin rotated only, so that may account for that) but crud in the intercooler is almost stopped (re-conned turbo thats not 100% on the sealing front or failing valve stem oil seals I recon account for that too). Overall though, I'll not be putting t back on, as I didnt do it for the MPG's.

Keeping accurate mileage records is a matter of necessity. I'm self employed and back-charge my company for the business miles I do in the Discovery. HMRC like to see nice neat records at tax-time ;-)

blanked off my EGR today didn't bother buying the kit made my own what a difference it is a lots more responsive well happy with it

Good. IIRC you can "dissable" the EGR if fitted without bolting anything in. My sister's 300 TDi has the EGR removed completely which makes more space but on ours I just fitted a blank.

i would love to work out my fuel consumption but my speedo likes to lie, if i sit at 60 my speedo starts to jump to 110mph-130mph :lol:

you got right the second time, its electronic and the odomater cant be right if i'm doing 60 and the speedo is flicking up to 130mph.

Ah, it suddenly dawned (where't eh little yellow fella with the lightbulb?) the sensor is driven by a cable form the gearbox, if it's reading way faster than you're doing perhaps that needs checking? if it just keeps dropping to zero I'd suspect either the drive gears or the sensor.

Does the old tightening the rear output flange wheeze work for discos - or is that just series and deafeners?
Could be that - i.e. a loose rear output flange nut causing the worm drive wheel to slip........
