what is the best type of welder to use on a vehicle, say if rust needs patching or sills need replacing? i have a stick welder and have taught myself but it is ugly even tho it is strong.  Thx Ian

buy a grinder and a sanding flapper disc, then just neaten the welds up

MIG welding is best/easiest but the consumables are expensive by comparison and to be honest you are never going to get a perfect finish unless you can remove all rust and turn the car over so all welding is done in a flat position.
As said, buy a grinder  ;) I would also suggest a wire brush to fit as they are very good for removing rust without gouging the steelwork and taking the slag off the weld.

You say its ugly, what have you been welding?? Bodywork is very thin and personally I would leave the stick welding for the chassis.

MIG, MIG or MIG.  You can try gasless for an easier set-up or strong winds, traditional gas mig using either CO2 or CO2/Argon for better cooliong (needs more current IIRC).

If you've got big pots of cash try TIG, less heat, less distortion, many many more headaches if you aren't very good.
