Title: 300tdi Serpentine Belt
Post by: Mark_Solesbury on December 30, 2008, 13:14:34
Hi

The Serpentine Belt on my 90 has a massive crack down it now. It still works ok, but its days are numbered.

I got a new one from Landrover, same as the old one. Same make, same model, same length.

I swapped it over yesterday and the new one squeaks like hell!

Its really really loud on tickover, and worse when you rev it.

Any ideas?

I put the old one back on and its fine. Ive checked that the old and the new are the same length and diameter.

This seems to be a thing with 300TDI engines, are you sure the belt is tightened up properly?

You cant adjust the 300tdi, as it has a pulley on a spring to take up the tension.

Thats what I mean,. Is the tensioner making the belt tight enough or does the tensioner need to be replaced as it is worn?

is the belt slipping or it is actually moving and squeaking while it moves?

Its hard to tell..

Its turning, and the alternator light is not on so it must going quick enough for that to charge.

It sounds horrible! It looks to be sitting square on all of the pullys

give the tensioner a little slap with the hammer so that it gives a little more tension. dont spray wd40 or anything like that onto it.

hi there

I had the same problem after i put on a new belt. I 'slapped' the tensioner, greased it, checked alignment, used the penny trick and then bought a new one.........

the wheel bearing was shot, now i have a quiet belt.

The bearing in the tensioner is only 6 months old max.

Ill check it tomorrow.

It still doesnt explain why the old one is quiet!

I replaced the tsnsioner on my sister's 300 "just as a precaution" when I did the head.  The arm is slightly oout of line which throws the belt onto the front of the water pump pulley where it rides up, cuts the front of the belt off and eats the top hose.  2 belts later, one near miss with overheating and several instances of failing PAS due to belt slippage I worked out what was going wrong

So be careful, it was a branded part!

P.S. what's the penny trick?

Trap a penny peice behind the tensioner just to bring it out and ine it up better.

i found that its the pas pump that makes the belt run out of alignment and shred the edge of it.

when the pump fails it can move out of alignment i found

So are they all as poo?

David I checked all the pulley carefully now, but what really gives it away is the engine wa fine untill I swapped the tensioner "to be on the safe side"

Also it only jumps out of the water pump pulley which strongly suggests it;s the tensioner feeding it thats at fault.

I had the same problem with a squeak from my serpantine belt, i got a long spanner and pushed on the bolt that holds the tensioner pulley down onto the belt and the squeak stopped.

I replaced the whole tensioner unit and the squeak stopped so the spring in the tensioner must have worn and lost some of its 'TWANG'.

Easy job to do cost me about £40 for the whole unit.
