Title: Booster starter pack
Post by: davidjmiller on January 03, 2009, 20:08:12
If you've read my other thread on here you'll know that my 300Tdi often gets ignored for days at a time and when it's colled the electrickery leaks out and it won't start. To resolve this problem in the short run (i.e. get it started tomorrow) I'm off to Argos to buy a booster starter pack. How good does it have to be??

Would this be ok?....

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001151&langId=-1&searchTerms=7402113

or would this be worth the extra....

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001151&langId=-1&searchTerms=7402869

or can you recommend something better??

Many thanks,

David

well the first 1 needs to plugged into the mains to operate, but would be ok if you left it on charge for a breif while before boost starting

the second is a mobile booster pack, which would do the job, but the cheaper ones dont tend to last, pro jobs costs hundreds !!

Hi m8, i use these ones and i have never had any problems with them, the only down side though is that they need a 12hr charge

I bought a cheap booster pack/compressor/12v supply/light unit from Aldi and it really is pants. It won't hold a charge for any length of time.

The only one i havent been able to fault yet is the Snap On heavy duty one!

That thing would start a cruise liner i swear! lol

They are a bit dear though!

I had one, also pants.  Buy a decent second battery and some good jump leads, works for me.

P.S> try a scrappy for the batterys, a had a mate who was junking cars and used to buy good batteries from him for £5 each, they all went into my mate's car showroom and saved a fortune.  Youi'd be amazed how many sxcrap cars have an almost new battery (and tyres, exhausts etc.).

You also need to check both the ampage and CCA (cold cranking amps) which is the bit that the jump pack delivers whilst your trying to start the vehicle.

I've got 2 jump packs a Sealey RS1 which is great for small tuff. but won't fire over my 200tdi and a MAC one which is awesome thats got 900 amp cca I think off the top of my head BUT they are close to 200 quid.

If you dont use the vehicle much and electricity is available you would be much better off with a trickle charger or battery conditioner like the Optimates..

Jump packs do not solve the problem off a knackered battery ! I go to loads of  cars in my job and alot of people comment on the fact that they could do with a jump pack and my answer every time is get a decent battery...

Incidently the battery on my 110 has just died due to the cold weather and like yours it doesn't get used :(

If its a second car why not just get a decent set of jump leads?
Also is there any reason the battery cant be disconnected when not in use?
I got a lorry battery that is kept on a trickle charge in the garage  ;)

Maybe I'm just tight

I guess the obvious consideration is that a decent car battery will cost £50+, so any device costing £15 can't have a decent battery in!

I've a black and decker one, has a air compressor in it as well.  Holds charge well, and can start my V8 five or six times before needing charging.  One of the best buys of last year for me, as it also got me a few pints when the neighbours cars wouldn't start :)

look at my reply to your other post. I would advise a solar pannel to trickle charge your battery to keep your battery in tip top condition. a car battery that goes flat and left for ages doesnt do the battery much good.

Thanks, I looked at these in Tesco's yesterday and did wonder. I'm not suggesting I'd buy anything for my landy there but the idea has nestled into my head.

I've got one of those fitted, but the battery still died last week due to the cold - but it has been -3 for a few nights without being used.

I've got a VARTA silver nickel thingy battery.  Flatten it so much that the lights don't come on with the ignition   Charge it up and it's still good.

Avoid cheapo batteries, thats' why they are cheap.

Good point, and just at the time of year it's needed!
