Title: difference in axles
Post by: muddy4x4 on January 10, 2009, 21:10:19
 After some help,

Can anybody tell me what the difference is between a salisbury axle and standard LR axle and are they the same on a  disco I?

basically the rover axles have a removable diff ie it is built into a casing then bolted into the case of the axle, the salisbury diff is built into the axle casing and has to be dismantled to be removed from the casing, as far as i know salisbury axles were only fitted as standard in the rear axles of 110 inch land rovers, disco,s only have the rover type axles fitted front and rear which means front and rear diffs are the same and interchangeable with other rover axles front or rear. salisbury axles are available to fit the fronts but they are not very common the salisbury is regarded as stronger than the rover axle diffs but when it does break is is much harder to replace :)

Hi,

Salisbury's are totally different to a standard Disco 1 Axel, they are basically all beefed up with stronger diffs (4 pin I think), halfshafts etc the Disco one IIRC has a 10 spline Axel and move to 24 Spline on the Disco 2.

Salisbury axles are common on the rear of Defenders, more on the 110 I think (not sure)

Question is why the question what are you doing to warrant needing one.

110 and 130 rear axle, not sure if the 130 front axle was Salisbury and are the Wolfs not salisbury too?

Also of course the 101 front and rear.

Salisbury is part of the same company as Dana and it would appear that the centre out of the Salisbury fitted to the rear of LWB defenders was thesame as a Dana 60. One of the people on Difflock forum posted a pictures showing some of the internals of his Salisbury axle with DANA stamped.

As well as the 101, some other land rovers had Salisbury axles on the front as well. The defender ambulances are the example that comes to mind where I've seen this.

Salisbury axles were also fitted to the rear of some series land rovers, but these are not identical to the Salisbury axles on defenders, narrower at least.

Those are 130 too aren't they, but I'm not sure if they aren't also V8 :-k
