having owned my disco for nearly a week now and not with standing it not being on the road, when should i start feeling emotionally attached to it and being all smug and proud about being green oval? cos at the mo i'm none of those things. is there somthing wrong?

when it breaks down, thats when you will start having feelings for it :grin: seriously give it a while.

it comes when you park it next to the vastly inferior japanese version, and think yep their heaters work and they dont rust after 5 years, but you know exactley which one youd rather have :D

Try:
- Look at the photos of Land rovers in pictures section of LRO or read any of the history stuff
Watch the Landrover going up a dam advert on you tube
Watch some Camel trophy on You Tube
Find your local club and got to an RTV event.
That usually gets you in the mood

When you break down and fix it for less than £50 knowing if it was a jap vehicle it's be costing £300 - Breaking a diff for example.
Or doing your own lift kit or maintanence etc

It depends.... Why did you buy it? Transport or a 'hobby'? Will be mostly seen in the supermarket car park or in the countryside?
If you've bought it as a hobby then you must have green blood already - takes time for the emotional attachment to build.
After nearly nine months of LR ownership (albeit a "beginners" LR) I'm hooked and keep browsing the small ads for another one that I really don't need and cannot afford. But they're lovely vehicles...

why did i buy it? good question, mostly to replace the mav which whilst repairable has got beyond economic repair for me as it needs more welding than i can do on my drive. so it will be used for towing on the farm, green laning and general daily driver. however. it is one of those cars that even without a test says "restore me i'm worth it, you know you want to"
having just read the last bit back to myself i suspect i may already be more attached to it than i think!

Aftter fixing it so many times you think nothing else can fail, then it does :evil: you have spent three times the original purchase price on upgrades and have a 50/50 chance of getting less than half your money back........ [-o<
Then when you are so fed up, cold, hands are cut to pieces, knuckles bruised...... you have repaired it :dance: :dance:
So you take it for a spin and......
ALL IS FORGIVEN
Then you go and rev the nuts off it, cover it in various shades of MUD, drive it through 3ft of water, run it over rocks, gravel, sand and anything else you see as fun........................ and wonder how you broke it :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

I should add that when I bought mine, a friend who has had several Discoveries said "welcome to a world of pleasure, pain and great expense". 8-[
But when they work they're wonderful :)

Yes, there is something rather strange about LR ownership.
When we bought the first Freelander, it squeaked and rattled. Any other vehicle would have gone straight back to the dealer, but having owned a 110 for some time prior to that, we just laughed and accepted that maybe it was a 'real' Land Rover after all :lol:
There have been few vehicles that I've been sad to see go, but the 110 is one of them. My theropy is a full ground up build of a 90 :roll: :lol:
Of course, a level of insanity is required for a true love of the damn things!

it is strange , always been a car nut , usually high performance stuff. but when i got me first disco a late 200 tdi i loved it . it was spotless always broke down something or another, then got another because i seen people at the shows driving through mud and water and thought me 200 was to clean to abuse so i got me 300 in me avatar . took it out knocked the s/step off and a bit of damage here and there and decided to do it up keep it to replace me 200 then got a rough 300 for playing . love it . they always seem to need something . i have had another 200 since just as a project. i look at motors now and just cant seem to see anything apart from landys that apeal to me . the pure simplicity and as said cheap parts.. today ive just replaced the alternator i know ive a wheel bearing gone but one day . but wouldnt do without it . so does this answer the question ?. nope probably not . but i bet the next truck i buy will be a green oval ..alan.

SO so true,
Ive spent over £700 on broken bits since just before Christmas and I was cursing it, swearing Id sell it, hated it and then it was fixed and the love was there again.
Having said that, I did learn a valuable lesson.
I avoided abusing it for a while and it still broke something so it doesnt matter what you do with them, if there gonna break they will break but its like having a big row......making up is alwasy the best bit!!!

well having spent all day fettling i am now in a posstion to confirm i am hooked, at has made me happy and upset in equal measure and i have cursed it so much that one of the mechanics was shocked by my use of obscenity and i have given it a name. all is well with the world!
