Post by: landroverkeith on January 15, 2009, 13:28:50
  can anyone shed some light please, ive just changed the starter motor on my dads discovery N reg 300 tdi as the old one was sticking constantly and wouldnt turn the engine over when it did catch on the key, now were having the same problem. Initialy the battery was flat and had to jump it off my disco all was well on and off couple of times and all was dandy but now as i say it wont fire just that annoying clicking noise any help would be appreciated

How long have you charged the battery for and how long has it been flat?I reckon if you give it a good overnight charge things should all be well again. If its been flat for weeks and you have just jumped it to get it going chances are the alternater hasnt had long enough to bring it back up to fully charged. It takes alot out of the battery starting it over and over to check things out.Have you checked the voltage at the terminals running and off?The cold weather does them no favours either and if left flat for a while(how long I cant say as im no expert) it can [!Expletive Deleted!] them altogether.

I would LOVE to reply Kieth but I am afraid as my Disco is my only mode of transport at the moment I can't risk making you jealous I am afraid.

As Peasey said... your battery may have 'ceased to exist' - long slow charge needed if there is any chance of it coming back to life if the thing has been fully discharged and left flat for any time.

Cold, damp weather... don't you just hate it?

Hope you get it sorted

Thanks M8, I might very well pop over but not until after lunchtime, I've got some people to meet at Emberton Park, (I've got me static caravan up for sale) and in any case I don't actually know your address anyway.
