Title: Bulkhead rust prevention
Post by: Big G on January 30, 2009, 18:57:35
Just been doing a bit of reading about rustproofers. Now I know its a losing battle but I intend to have a go in the summer at rustproofing my 90 Bulkhead. I`ve decided to use Dinitrol and spray it in through the Hinge bolt holes and the screen bracket holes. Just posting this to get any further hints or tips from you guys ..... all replys appreciated ...  8-[

well the rust that gets in the bulkhead rusts from the inside out,how about trying expanding foam in the holes, water doesnt soke into it cause it goes off with a waxy coating,i have tried it on cars that i have worked on, :-k and it seems to work

When I bought my SIII 12 years ago it had previously been owned by someone (some mentally defective more like) who'd thought that aerosol expanding foam was the answer to preventing further rust problems. Well it wasn't. And it continued to drive me nearly mad until I'd managed to get rid of most of it - generally through having to weld new metal in to replace the rust around the foam.

Whatever anyone tells you it absorbs water and once you fill a hollow section with a wet sponge the obvious happens. My view is that you'd be better off drilling holes in a bulkhead than injecting foam into one that was already rusting - at least then moisture already in there could dry out.

Dinitrol is good stuff. Expensive, but worth it. I'm just going to use Waxoyl, but I'm warming it to make sure it soaks into all the seams.

Mines going for galvanising  :afro:
However a good dose of Waxoyl or Dinitrol should do the trick...just don't apply it sparingly  [-X

My neighbour (Car windscreen fitter) is replacing my screen along with the prished rubber, when its out will it expose much of the inside of the bulkhead so I can get more rustproofer in? Just a thought ............  :-k

No...none

Best thing to do is remove top hinge bolt & squirt in through there & up from underneath.  :afro:
