Title: Excessive play!!!!
Post by: Paulsou on February 03, 2009, 14:24:07
Disco has just failed MOT with excessive play in o/s swivel housing, is it a case of adjustment? and if so what is the best way of adjustment?

Firstly check that it's the swivel and not the wheel bearing, lots of garagges really don't know what they are talking about!

Assuming yours does then the swivel is supported by 2 taper roller bearings if it's a non-abs axle and a lower TRB and upper Railko bush on ABS axles.  The former can be adjusted by removing shims that control the pre-load (cruch) on the tapers, but if it's now loose one or both might be collapsing so think about replacing them.  If there is any oiol left in the swivle has it started to leak?

If it's the ABS axle then you can still adjust it but you cannot do anything about sidewyas play in the upper bush other than replace the bush and pin, not cheap or easy.

On the top and bottom of the swivel pin housing are four (two on top, two on bottom) 11/16 or 17mm bolts. The top holds the brake pipe bracket on and the pin bearing locator thing.

Undo them, lift out the top and bottom pins and remove a couple of shims so about 1kg of pressure is enough to move the swivel pin housing. Might be worth replacing the seal while you are at it as it is probably knackered.
