Title: Td5 Brakes Binding
Post by: diggerdog36 on February 09, 2009, 15:02:29
My 2000 Td5 has a problem with the front left brake.  Its binding on.  Ive changed the disks and pads (incase they were warped) changed the caliper incase it was seized.  But the problem persists.  The wheel bearing is fine, car pulls to the left and when I dont use the brakes on a journey, the left is really hot and the right is cold (as I would expect).
Has anyone experienced this before???

Any suggestions will help.  Please not "Torch it" "scrap it"!!!

I've had this happen on mine as well.  To fix it I rebuilt the caliper with new pistons/seals/etc which sorted it.

As you've changed the entire caliper I'm surprised that you've still got a problem.  Could be that you've got another duff caliper . . . .

No, the caliper was brand new and working, the pistons were free to move.  Im baffled!!

Is the caliper free to move on the guide pins?

If they are okay then I'm at a loss as well :?

I took the guide pins out and cleaned them and put on the little bag of grease I got with them, even though they were OK, I was just clutching at straws!!!

Just a thought but do the pads move freely?. When I changed mine recently I found the same caliper as you are having problems with was slightly smaller where the pads fit. I had to file the edges down slightly so that they would move freely.

Hmm, Ive changed the pads, but they were a little tight to get in, Im having the brakes off tonight so I may take a little off them, I dont want them to chatter though!

Right, little update, but im sure it will baffle you as much as it baffles me!!

I jacked the car up before we went any where and the wheel was hard to turn, i then pressed the brake, I cracked the pipe at the ABS module, the wheel was hard to turn, I then cracked it off at the join between flexi-pipe and rigid pipe, wheel was hard to turn!

I then cracked it off at the caliper, wheel was hard to turn.  When I say cracked it off, I mean undo completely!!  I whipped off the caliper and pushed the pistons back by hand, it was hard but I did manage it with my thumbs.  My sliders slide really easily, absolutley no resistance. I then rigged it all back up and bled the brakes, pressed the pedal again, wheel was hard to turn, I then forced the caliper back with a screwdriver to get the wheel to turn.
Baffled!!

Nope, even when I disconnect the pipe it still wont release!!  But the caliper is brand new, im going to change the carrier and pins....then its getting torched!!

Try taking a piston out then blow the caliper out with an air line as it may have swarf or a seal sliver blocking the oil way.

Is the calliper mounting rubbing against the disc? do you get any noise from the wheel when running.

Caliper is brand new, as is fluid, hose, disk and pads, no noise when running.  Nothing is rubbing the disk apart from the pads.  Ive ordered a new carrier and pins.....so lets hope that works
