wondering if anyone can shed some light on my problem, i have a disco 300. is very short of power, makes all the right noises but seems really gutless. loses power on the hills too. i have changed the manifold gasket as it was leaking, took out the air filter, not put in a new one yet. changed the fuel filter. cleaned the intercooler out, wasnt bad. need some help, still has all the egr rubbish on but dont think that will cause this. head gasket looks good. does have a whine fron a tensioner bearing though. help. its emmbarassing.

The EGR shouldn't make it that gutless, but they're not rocket ships unless you do some tweaking. Have you checked the fuel lift pump and that there's plenty of fuel getting through?

Have you checked that the turbo hoses are good? They can delaminate inside as well!
Also is the clutch biting properly? I have this with mine where the clutch is not quite engaging properly all the time, so i get higher than normal revs and it dies on the hills, especially when towing! I'm guessing that the oil seal between engine and box is leaking with me and contaminating the clutch.

Is the turbo working? Can you feel a little extra power at around 1700 rpm or can you hear it if you open the passenger front window?
If not then there's a "C" clip that hold the adjuster bar for the turbo onto the wastegate, make sure that's still on it. You find it under the exhaust manifold.
It could also be no vacuume to lift the diaphram in the injector pump or a hole in the diaphram. These would both stop the extra fuel gettting to the engine.

think theres a t peice just to the right of the brake servo . as you look from the front . these can brake , can make a lot of difference to turbo operation ,, alan

some great tips there guys. i can hear the turbo working, seems like it is too so im not sure what to think, dont think its the clutch. revs die, not overrevving with no bite.although the biting point is quite high but still strong. as said i can hear the turbo spinning a lot. more so after i took out the air filter, think all the hoses are ok, had them off recently. not sure how to check the fuel pump. never played with one before. might just give it a tweek to see if that helps. will clean the sedimentor tom if i can. ill look over the t peice and c clip too. cheers guys.

If the turbo is spinning then I would be looking at the intercooler hoses for splits and delamination on the inside as crazymac said.
The delamination can block/part block the hose and stop the air getting to the engine.
I wouldn't go tweeking anything until you've found out why it's low on power in the first place. ;)
Has this only just started happening or has it been like this for a while, say since you put larger tyres on?

its been like this since i got the disco. three months ago, bought it with a blown manifold gasket. sorted that but still the same. its good on fuel tho. maybe 150 miles to £20. or so. need it fixed as its annoying. not changed wheels or anything but do have a front prop issue,. see other post.

What size tyres are on there?
Just thinking that if they are something like 235x85's then it could be the gearing that's causing the problem rather then anything mechanical. ;)

205's on the front ans 235's rear, come like that, all road bias.

I hope the front & rear tyres are both the same diameter. :-.

205/85 and 235/85 will be different

Watching this thread as my 300 is exactly the same totally gutless and has been since i bought it...
wont pull above 60, and only gets to 60 if i literally stand on the throttle on a run its always been the same from standard to the state it is now...

If it's that economical I'm thinking the turbo/extra fuel aren't working rather than an engine problem. I had a turbo hose blow off and it drove like you describe.
Perhaps a turbo boost guage might tell you something?

My 200 tdi was the same , found out it was the diapham and cone shaped plunger in the fuel pump , the fuel pin was seized in one position and not letting plunger go up and down . Sorted this and it pulled like it should.
It might be worth a look-ski !!!!!

hmmmm,lots for me to look at then. cheers guys. your all great. keep the ideas coming. r,e my tyres. would having a slightly wrong size front to rear destroy my u,j's? im losing my front ones a bit. :oops:

It might be worth cleaning the intercooler as well as all the other suggestions that have been made

well, for today. looked over the disco, c clip is still there. swapped all the tyres for my set all a.t's. all the same. seemed a little better but might be me just hoping. noticed i need a wheel bearing though, :doh: its never fair.
