Hello
1996 300tdi Disco - auto is occasionally failing to start first thing on a morning. It sounds as though its turning over slowly when the ignition key is turned. I initially thought it was the battery, but when the headlights are switched on whilst attempting to start they don't dim by much and when jump leads are attached from a van it still won't start. :( :(
This only happens occasionally, other than this the Disco will run perfect.
Hope there's someone out there with some idea of what this maybe, partner had to run for the bus this morning!!!!!!

StarterMotor ??

or check the earth wire from starter to chassis may look fine but take it off and clean it anyway plus wen you try to start also check to see if this wire gets hot

Would say starter or earth wire
or even both !!!

I've got this very same problem but mine is due to either a dodgy earth or dodgy battery...my guess is my battery as I had put it on charge for 3 days and it still wouldn't work, although I may or may not have forgotten to turn the charger on!
I then charged it up for a day or so and there was a bit of life in the battery but it still took a set of jump leads and an extra battery to start it!
When I warm it up it'll start first turn of the key but if it's cold I still have to jump it.

If you have the problem , put a decent jump lead from the (- battery) to the block some were, and try, if its sorts it its the earth. Normal fault on on 300 tdi,

i had this problem recently with mine (94 disco 300tdi), changed the starter and made it slightly better for a short term but turned out to be the battery in the end, i did charge it but that worked only for a bit. i then checked the acid and that was low strength so i made more and re newed the acid. then set battery charger to trickle charge over the next couple of days - think it was a 4amp trickle. thats what i was advised - lower trickle rather than fast charge will benifit the battery. so might be worth checking the acid strength if u have a battery that u can get to the cells???

Agreed as above if the battery is fully charged drop a jump lead from the battery neg to the engine direct, and pray :)

I checked my battery showed good and holding charge. On the car it either turned over slowly or quick for a few seconds then died.New battery its been fine. The old battery is now on my 2 1/4 Petrol .It works fine there.
