Title: V8 Not starting but have spark.
Post by: BobtailBogey on March 21, 2009, 19:12:25
Well been trying most of the afternoon and we seem to have spark but dont seem to be getting fuel through.

put a working fuel pump on but its not pumping???

replaced all relays with ones out my running v8 but also put 3 relays into the 3 connections pictured below as they were all empty for some reason..

Any ideas what to try?
Speedo, Rev counter and fuel gauge also not working if this helps at all..

Have got the fuel pump working now there must be a break in the wire between the relay and the pump so have replaced that temporarily.
and it seems to attempt to fire now and then but wont catch.
took all the plugs out and a few of them dont seem to be dirty at all but the others are. they have recently been replaced.

so cleaned all the dizzy connections but still nothing.

There's a Shcreader valve on the fuel rail to check pressure, check you have pressure.

There's an inertia switch on the '91 onwards models, on the hard dash under the back inside edge of the passenger's seat on teh softie it's behind the washer bottle.  If the pump isn't running when you turn the ignition on then you have a problem.

If the fuel pump is OK then you could try taking out the idle over-run valve.  Located at the rear of the head on the drivers side.  Take out the two connectors and link them together.  Had this problem on my old 3.5.

how do i go about checking the fuel pressure?
is it just a case of making sure the fuel is coming out of the valve?

Yes the pump is only about 8 months old took it off my bobtail which is off th4e road having some work done.

its a '88 3.5 efi..

also changed the dizzy and arm to workingones but still nothing.

i have 5 days till we off to wales fore a week  :?

Ah, 3.5 flapper system, not my strong point.  Check there is some fuel, then get hold of a haynes manual for the RRC, the suppliment has everything you can check yourself on the EFi system.

Good luck ;)

Over-runvalve has already been by-passed before so thats all done

right it started tonight and ran for about 5 sec's
then ran again for a few sec's thenagain but now nothing.

all this was after i replaced the plugs and leads with the ones out of thebogey.

it was as though it was chocking itself either fuel or air so gonna rip the inlet off tomorrow and check the injectors.

Does it matter how the fuel pump is powered as long as its pumping? or does it also control how much fuel?

Fuel pump should prime, then runs all the time whilst the engine is running.  The pressure regulator on the fule rail keeps the fuel at a constant pressure, it allows the return fuel to the tank out at a preset pressure so as long as there's sufficient fuel being delivered then the regulator is the "control" part of the fuel rail.

IIRC you can check fuel rail pressure with a tyre gauge but get a fully brass one, not a plastic one.

Pump should run briefly at key on to pressurise the rail.

After that, it's switched by a set of contacts in the AFM.   With ignition on and airfilter off, poke the flap open and pump should run.  Let the flap close and pump should stop.  If the flap is jammed shut, or you have a large air leak so there's not enough air to open it, or those contacts are stuffed, the engine will start and run a few seconds just from the initial pump prime.

I had this problem a short while ago. would fire up for about 3-5 secs then cut out and i found it was the fuel cut off relay.

LOL. we have got a side road running between our house which leads down to the garages and when mine was playing up i had the drivers side wheels on the road up against the kurb and the rest on the grass. Got a letter from the council about packing it on the grass. Found out that a neighbour had been complaining he can get his car down the drive. Thinking about leaving the handbrake off and to roll into his car.
