Title: car tax need a bit of advice !!!
Post by: wizard on March 23, 2009, 21:07:42
To make a short story longer... my son let my brother use one of his cars while he is away on army duty. The road tax is now due and my daughter in law is very very very reluctant to give my brother the renewal notice or the v5.
Is there any way i can tax the vehcile without the renewal  or V5, because there is no way she will hand either over.

regards

Takes 5 mins to do it online. 3 mins if you have the renewal notice.

Take it to the PO and do it there.  If you have the slip from the V5 then that's good enough.  It's how I sorted our Focus when we got it.

Of course, if you do it on-line, the tax disc will be posted to the daughter-in-law who might just add it to the V5 and the reminder..............

This is why my brother didnt go down this route.
Unfortunately I only have one daughter in law and she is not exactly my favourite, if you get my drift!!!
I will nip down to the DVLA office this afternoon and see what they say.

Of course, if your brother continues to drive it with no tax, then the fine will go to the Daughter in law!!

Who's name is the car registered to? Is it your son?

What is her logic in not allowing him to re tax it?

The car is registered in my sons name, so any fine will go to him, so thats a no go.

As to her logic thats anyone guess, we had a bit of a falling out and I want nothing to do with her. My brother has texted her about a dozen times to either get the renewal notice or the V5 and he has had 3 replys saying the tax is not due until the end of March !!

I spoke to the DVLA and without the renewal notice or the V5 ref number he is stuffed.
If its not taxed by the end of the month, i'll let my brother use one of our cars and park the borrowed Astra on my sons driveway.
The only other problem i have is that i cant even sorn it without the same documents needed to tax it.
So again any fine from that will go to my son.

Thats all you can do.
Apply for another V5 pay £25.00 and wait 3 to 4 weeks.
