You have a loose earth that is shorting through the handbrake, by re applying it you sort it. ?

Dont worry though, as it wont do it for long before it burns the handbrake cable  through...........

Seriously though, Macs prolly right and you need to sort the engine earthing out as it will burn through the handbrake cable soon if not sorted........

Sort it by adding another earth strap from the engine to the battery or bodywork close by, you can't have too many earths.
