anyone had any dealings with the idiots that run the child tax credit system?
i,ve just recieved 3 letters stating i owe them nearly £5k
on investigation and stern words from swmbo( she,s not to be crossed in matters involving money :-$ ) they tell us to ignore the bulk of it as its their cock up we,ve been sent a bill however for the year april 04 to april 05 they say i owe them £750 as they overpaid me when i was made redundant and as they have no records (despite us telling them at the time) of me getting a new job i owe them.
This £750 had to be paid in full by the 21st april....i received the letter today What gives  so after 4 years of trying (according to them) i havent paid so now they want it all in one go
Now i,m sure i would have noticed the countless letters they say they,ve sent over the last 4 years reminding me i owe money dropping through my letter box.
so my question is do i have any chance of telling them to bog off as they,ve taken so long to sort it out?

I`d ask them for a breakdown and also copies of all letters that they have sent to u. Argue the case [-X

They run a dedicated telephone line for MPs to ring. Complaints have got that bad.
TBH we have given up talking to them.
They say they overpaid us one year and havn't paid us anything in the last 5 years "to reclaim the over payment". Funny thing the amount we owe hasn't gone down and in fact went up by £10 one year.
The idea was crap and the implementation was crap.

We got a payment into her bank account from them for £4500 about a year ago.
She told them they gave us the money and they asked " have you spent any? " she said yes a little bit ( we handnt ) they said thats fine and they will with hold any payments due until the amount of £4500 is reached.
We got them to put it in writing, the letter is in a very safe place, so we went and got a Citroen Piccaso
Not heard off them since. :D

despite us telling them at the time)
Just had similar problem with DVLA who claim not to have received my V5 when I sold the old motorbike. Seems they have you over a barrel and can deliberately foul up your credit rating. You may have a case but by the time you prove it you have to live with a bad credit rating - may be for years.
