hello,
i wont mention the name of the business because i dont want to cause trouble i hadnt intended,
this certain local 4x4 garage to here sold me a second hand turbo for £150 and it lasted a month after being told it would last a long time, ( have no car to take it back with at the moment but will be doing ) also the most important issue i need to ask is a mate ( no names ) has a disco 200tdi converted 90 which we knew had a dodgy chassis but he decided to let the mot go ahead and see if they thought it would last safely untill the next mot ( which i understand is a unfair question ) but what happened is this ....
it passed not advisorys ( dodgy on a 25 year old 90 )
its now off the road
chassy split in three places ( two months after the mot ) one of which being a cm wide in the rear suspension mount
brakes have nothing left and oil on them
they said they would have to take it a couple of miles to a mot tester for the test ( no milage increased on the speedo!!! )
what do we do, thats life threateningly dangerous surely? i know its up to him to keep his vehicle in good health but that should have failed on at least 7 points we have found and at least 20 advisories !!!
report to dvla?
go back and demand an explination?
ignore it?
what route is best taken
if anyone has spoken already to me and knows the company in question please mention no names!!!
cheers kieran

Report it to VOSA! Someone could have been killed!
What if I think it has wrongly passed?
These cases usually relate to recently purchased vehicles and you should let VOSA know as soon as possible. VOSA will then offer an appointment within 5 working days to recheck your vehicle without charge, provided:
* not more than 28 days have elapsed since the MOT test
* not more than three months have elapsed since the MOT test for a rust or corrosion related problem

The problem with second hand turbo's is there's no real way of knowing if their any good, why would someone take a good turbo off a good engine ?, most have come off knacked engines, you'll be lucky to get a good turbo secondhand, best go for recon .

chassy split in three places ( two months after the mot )
therein lies the problem, an MOT only states the vehicle has passed at that time.
IIRC it also states that ust because its passed the required test - it doesnt mean the vehicle is Road legal.(or words to that effect) - IE if something falls off down the road - tough!
May still be worth a word with VOSA though

I agree.

a split chassy especially not on a stress area to be a cm wide needs along time to occur, ill be reporting to vosa
many thanks kieran

just been about the turbo because to be fair a half refund should have happened, but he laughed in my face
i fully understand buying second hand stuff is risky but come one when it involves that much money, its a hell of a lot to pay for a lump of scrap,
all i can say is dont buy second hand turbos especially from any garage near buxton

I think you have a certain amount of time to appeal against "corrosion " issues after a mot, A call to vosa would not do any harm l
-
You have 3 months with corrsion. But if you have messed with it or toughed it your on a loosing battle
-
Ok,so what's your duff turbo got to do with your mates rotten chassis?
-
both from the same place,
i have a recon turbo now, paid for that with an am and a leg
will call vosa tomorow and see what they say, most likly they will get away with it
the garage in question said they did the mot prep ( he paid £60 for that bit )then they sent it to a differant garage to have the mot, are they both at fault??
cheers kieran

Well it gets me that people are thinking there vehicle is good with 12 months mot. The stardards for a mot is bare miniumin. Read the back of the VT20 you are responsible for the other 364 days of the year :|
If you do get vosa involved they will want £56.10 for a test up front. But you will get it back if the garage is @ fault 8-[

That only applies if you actually want a new MOT, not if you are just reporting the garage (IIRC).
I went through the appeal system a few months ago with my Defender.

Agreed, call VOSA if not for you mate but for the other peopl who are likely to have the same things happen to them.
I'm sure there are plenty of us who have had a vehcile fail the test only for the tester to let it pass so long as we do the work, ie bulbs out, horn not working etc, but fixed in the car park before we leave or the cert is printed, but these days are mostly gone now.
Could you live with the knowledge that if you don't report them some else may be hurt and you knew full well that they were a dangerous outfit?
-
The MOT is only as good as the test on the day , YOU KNEW the motor had a dodgy chassis when you took , so why are you bleating now.. trying to blame somebody else..

I think you've missunderstood, he has a car that passed the MOT when quite clearly it shouldn't have done. I don't call that bleating. I've taken a car for test before now that I didn't expect to pass so that I knew what needed fixing, but then I know a couple of good MOT testers who are very fair but very thorough so that I know exaclty where I stand.
BTW, one of them told me VOSA are now checking up on repairs to cars presented for retest so as he's a mate he came and lifted the carpets on a car I had welded up whilst I was putting it back together

I was once bidding on a Mk2 escort at auction and it got down to me and a friend of my other half so I let them have it, 6 months later they sold me the car for less than they bought it for :D
Anyway the car was being sold with a fresh 12 month MOT and the friend was an MOT tester, when he got it back and had a proper look at it, it was a real rot box and there was no way it should ave passed. He reported the garage, many, many miles away so not his competition etc and I beleive they got a big reprimand, can't remember precise details it was 8 years ago. The car was repaired by him and then more by me and continued on for sometime after but the rust on it was quite obviously there at test - floor pans were hanging off etc - before anyone says we should ave looked at it first etc - yes we should but as it sold for £100 or £200 and I later bought it for half that (as I say details sketchy now) and this was from an estate auction not a motor auction so different viewing we didn't but at the price we were willing to take the risk - such is the nature of auctions. Wish I could still buy Mk2s for that sort of money.

No not misunderstood, .........Come on Kizzzi , lets have the Vosa findings.........Range Rover Blues ...., too many people bleat about things get garages a bad name , ...Sentencing before a trial..Wheres the Garage to put there side ? , RESULTS of findings should be published not the walk to the gallows...........
