Title: Anyone else keep chickens?
Post by: V8MoneyPit on April 11, 2009, 20:25:37
We have a selection of breeds, some in our back garden, some at our fields. Nothing quite like fresh eggs for breakfast  :D

This is Terminator and Henrietta. Yes, I know, but the Terminator is viscious  The one on the left (Terminator!) is a Blue Orpington and Henrietta is a Cochin. We also have Legbars and hybrids. They all follow us around like dogs! And go mental if we have a stale scone for them

I would love to be in a position to keep chooks and ducks, as well as pigs (no comments please! :police:), but in our current location its just not possible.

Her Ladyship and I may be moving to Dorset in a couple of years, so hopefully a place with some land may be a possibility.

Until then, I keep my dreams of self sufficency in my head :(

They look great.
When I lived at home, my mother kept bantams. She is talking of gets some chickens again. The garden is not the biggest but its fine for a few chooks.
I'd like to keep a goat or two myself.

We've only had them for a month or so. I was sceptical at first, but I have to admit they are very endeering. And cost a 'paltry' amount to keep...... Sorry

We just have to let them out in the morning and they put themselves back in the coop at dusk, so we just close the door on them.

LSP - If you've got an area of garden available, go for it. They only need a few square metres each although more is better. And even just a couple will produce enough eggs to make you sick of omelette!

Its not so much the land availability, its more the whinging neighbours. While I'm not normally one to 'conform to the norms of surburban dwelling', the local authority would raise cain over it.
I'll hang on for a couple of years to give me time to find my ideal place, away from the trappings of consumer life and the influence of town dwelling.

As the old saying goes "You can take the boy out of the country, butyou can't take the country out of the boy".

Something like that, anyway. :undecided:

I've been lobbying my parents to adopt a couple of rescue chickens for some time now. The neighbours already have some (including a rather fine cockerel which occasionally escapes and struts around next door's garden until noticed and repatriated!) so I doubt anyone could complain.
