Title: pre-load on swivel housing
Post by: iann41 on April 16, 2009, 08:18:10
When checking the pre-load on the swivel housing, do you add or take away shims on the top swivel pin to increase the load? Ive tried both and its still quite sloppy. Thx Ian

remove shims to make it tighter, as you want to push the bearing down further into the race.

I've been having a nightmare with mine, I'm down to only 2 very thin shims on either side and its still sloppy, reulting in a bit of vibration at 50mph...
I rebuilt them last year using cheap and nasty (B**tpart) bearings, I think I'll re-do them with proper branded bearings when the weather warms up a bit...

What year is it and does it have ABS or not? there are differnet specs for the preload and what makes it worse is the first year the ABS axles were fitted they had a very tight swivel, this si the one refered to in the Haynes manual. The top swivel was then redesigned and has a very loose preload (it inlcudes a thrust bearing) and if you tighten these later bearings to the spec for the early ABS axle they will expire.

A big culprit for steering kickback is the tracking, I kid you not :-. also the state of the radius arm bushes and panhard rod bushes plus of course any play in the balljoints/steering box.

The vehical is a P reg 300tdi with ABS.

I gather that i will need the swivel housing set slightly loose.

Not loose as in rattly but not very very tight, no.  You need to check the LR manual or RAVE to get the correct setting.
