Title: Can you tell what it is yet? Its Finished....
Post by: BigA on April 23, 2009, 14:04:45
its amazing what you can knock up from what your work place considers rubbish  :? This picture is early days yet but can you tell whet it is yet?

Just now need to figure out the best way to do the top, steal or thin ply i was thinking, and then carpet, and get some chequer plate to fit to front of the drawers and plate the back of them. Oh and some kind of latch.

what do you think?

Andy

Now then.....  :-k

One of my lads already suggested i leave them as servers (i did point out the cases are now empty). If i did that, and had the power to run them, i am sure i could manage a popcorn maker too

Boot Floor should be sealed. New floor last year, and just done my arches ready for MOT. The drawer unit will be removable, in fact that's causing me an issue (lots of head scratching) at the moment as to how best to fasten it down when its in?

You could use something like this along the back ...one strip on the floor and one on the unit.

then a couple of tabs on the front with bolts through into captive nuts in the floor . then you only need to remove two bolts and slide it out

Now that looks a good idea.

Its all been held up a bit whilst i sorted the Disco out for its MOT (it passed  ). but i have extended the back and plated the front of the frame, and chequer plated front of the drawers. I will try and get some more pictures up at the weekend.

i presume the rack chassis is mounted on rail kits making it a piece of piddle to slide out, but i would suggest you get a couple of the same model server chassis spare and have two types in each chassis so if, say you are going out on a picnic, you shove picnicy stuff in one and laning kit in the other then unrack and swap :)

i do a similar thing but with those Really Useful Boxes you can buy in Hobbycraft and placves like that,
ive got 4 32 litre boxes with different stuff in, and i chuck whatever box is needed in the back and strap it down! job done!!

Now i didnt think of that, i just neeed to find a couple more going spare now. the two that i had have the rails at different heights so getting two more the same could be fun.

i have the handles now, just got to cut the front plates to fit them and then allmost don. i will try and get more pictures up then.

That looks fantastic

great job , question , does the stuff in it rattle and make noise and howmuch weight will the draw hold before the runners give way ??

I have lined the drawers with laminate flooring underlay, to try and cut down on rattles  [-o<

how long untill it falls apart is still to be tested. The runners are welded to the box section, but it was a pain to get a decent weld. According to my lad, i should get around the corner from the house before at all collapses (theres faith for you)

Smart looking indeed (I like the those handles) and good recycle of gear.

On my defender I never bothered with proper draws under the tread plater false floor as the frame, rails and draws themselves would all take up and restrict the space that I can put to better storage use. I slide in a couple of big lin-bin's one side and hi lift, ground anchor, spade, tyre repair, compressor, dog bowls, etc etc on other, ugly as sin yes but practical and everything is held inbetween the rear door and dog guard anyway.

Saffy,

i was doing similar myself, the board on the top at the moment was what i originally had. My dogs are jack russells, and it helped them see out of the windows too. Only knocked these up as i came about the chassis.

Would like to chequer plate the top of mine, but cant bring my self to buy that amount yet.
