I'm busy finishing my PGCE with an assignment about the new engineering diploma and routes for pupils to get into engineering.
As usual the internet is not much use but neither are any of the lit. sites I have access to .
So, if anyone is involved in teaching the new diploma would you mind dropping me a PM or let me know where I can find out a bit more.
If any of you are engineers I need a couple of "case studies" about how you got into engineering and what route/qualifications etc you took and where you ended up.
With 1 in 5 school leavers targeted to do a modern apprenticeship (I kid you not) the traditional acedemic route that I took is becoming far less relevent, plus it was a long time since my friends and I graduated.
Any help appreciated ;)

NVQ level 3.
Rolls Royce Motor Cars down here in Goodwood nr Chichester.
Rolls Royce want all their apprentices (4) to do the Level 3. We have a day release from work for one day a week to attend college for the theory of mechanical engineering.

2.5 year apprenticeship at Army Apprentice College in Telecoms Engineering....
mind you... that was way back in the very early eighties!
not sure of it's relevence but if your interested... I can give you more detail.
More up to the minute, I know that the Army still has colleges and still offer apprentices, particularly in the technical subjects, Telecom/IT, Mechanincs, Optical, etc

I spent 4 years at Birmingham Uni to come out with a degree in Civil Engineering. I work with highways structures, currently on a contract with the Highways Agency looking after the trunk roads and motorways in the East Mids.
Prior to that I spent a bit of time working for a roped access company, got some piccies somewhere of me hanging of the top of the ghirkin in London.
I've a short PP slideshow of what we do here if it's any use to you Andy.

Would you mind telling me how you came to be at Uni then, what did you do at school and did you go straight there? what other options did you have etc etc.
If it's any consolation Engineering is the biggest growing employment sector int he UK for the secong year in a row ;)

At school i did Maths, Further Maths and Physics A level and ICT at As. At GCSE we didn't have any of the fancy subjects back then (02/03 :) ) like engineering and so did ict, graphics, geography, history and spanish over the core subjects.
I came straight from school to uni and didn't really consider any other options to be honest. I looked at apprenticeships briefly and thought the uni lifestyle for 4 years too appealing! I didn't take a gap year due to wanting to do education in block and didn't go straight into work as i personally wanted a degree, probably to keep up with the rest of my family.
I'm studying for a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and due to finish in a month.
No regrets so far and seem to be among the lucky few to have secured a graduate scheme placement from september to start pushing for chartered status with the IMechE.

Graduate scheme is with Network Rail, 4 years moving around different 9 month placements. Based in Derby means i can live at home in Ches and spend more on the landy! I applied to the green oval, but was too late with the application and now have to work with tracks....

I'm a project Engineer working for a company who do everything from facilities management to automotive batteries...
The department I work for designs and builds air con, process cooling and refrigeration equipment for submarines and Navy ships all round the world.
I went back to Uni when I was 31 (am 36 now) and got a degree in Design Technology/ Engineering... I got this job as I became fed up with looking for a CAD job as they were all offering 3rd world money.
I enjoy the job as its interesting, and pays OK for a graduate job (only been in the post 2.5years)

I am a Marine Engineer; always had an interest in fixing things etc. and an interest in ships.
I looked at Naval Architecture but ended up choosing Marine Engineering IE going to sea.
After A Levels I did a three year cadet ship (two at college, one at sea), thena class 4 CoC and HND.
After requisite sea time I went back to college for class 2 CoC, More written and Oral exam then again more sea time and the same again for my class 1 certificate.

I currently work in a power station as a mechanical technician (Glorified craftsman title!),
I left school with 8 Standard grades (GCSE) Maths, Physics, Craft & Design, Graphic Communication, and German at 1 (A), Geography and Art & Design at 2 (B), and English at 3 (C), and 5 Highers (A levels) Maths - A, Craft & Design - C, Physics - B, English - D, Art & Design - D.
Wanted to be an architect but didn't want the debt of uni. Decided to do something with my hands as I loved mucking about with cars and fixing stuff in general
I served about 14 months of an apprenticeship in a scottish dockyard as a mechanical fitter/turner then left as it was crap but Completed an NC and a NVQ 2 before going!
I finished my apprenticeship with an outage repair team based at Eggborough power station completing a NVQ 3 and a HNC before travelling the country keeping the lights on!
I completed my HND (Company funded) whilst travelling before leaving to return to a permanent position at Eggborough.
Been there since, no more qualifications but several secondments as engineers of various sorts and most recently as a team leader which I now fill in for (Holiday n stuff), could have moved up but happy where I am to be honest.
