Give Direct Line a try, there not on any comparison sites. They charged me £400 for my 2.0t Saab 9-5 & I am only 22. Still not as cheap as the Range Rover though

NFU did my step son for £999 on a 1.3 polo as his first car the day he passed his test - this was with no prior insurance!

try compare the market.com, i got quotes for a load of 4x4s a month or so ago, a 110td5 van was £970 fullly comp, aged 21 with no noclaims and a clain in the last 5 years, grat price as i was paying £135 a month on my deisel rangie which is only worth £750 (and when it turned out i had 3 years ncb on a company car policy it went down even cheaper)
at least with compare the market you will get a quote rather than hanging on the phone for half an hour, giving your age and basically being told to p££s off as has happened to me.
and after youve been there ring adrian fluxes for a quote, theyll try and beat it- when i rang them and told them my lowest price so far of £970 they said thats pretty low, probably wont beat that, 10 minutes later said we can do it for £900  , but have another quote before you ring them
incidentally the nfu did me on a 2.25 petrol 110 from the day i was 17, regardless of what licencse i had

the reason it goes up so much when he passes is because he hasnt got an adult next to him to supervise him,
thats what i got told when my insurance doubled whn i was learning to drive,,

There's no substitute for shopping around - try the comparison web site, the direct only ins cos like Direct Line, and the specalist insurers like Adrian Flux.

Unfortunately insurance for young drivers is always horrendous regardless of how good a driver they are. When I was 18, even my advance driving qualifications didn't make any difference to the premium.

Good luck.

One place quoted £4k for me aged 17 in a 1.9D Citroen ZX. It wasn't quick, or skittish, or a car popular with that section of society fond of letting their trousers almost fall down. It just had an engine instead of a rubber band!

I get the distinct impression that some insurers give quotes like that when they simply don't want the business in the hope that you'll either go away or make it worth their while to insure you.

Bizarre insurance tale: My brother runs a 1988 Toyota MR2. His insurance with no prior no claims aged 21/22 was about £800, with the rest of us as named drivers and non-standard alloys declared. This on a 1.6l two seater mid engined sportscar!

Ding! Spot on.

Insurers have their "ideal risk", which will be their starting point: The further you deviate from that then the higher your premium.

So if an insurer's ideal risk is a 31 year old married male with a Ford Mondeo LX, garaged, in a low-risk area - and that's you - you'll get a good deal, while a 17 year old, single male, with a modified Vauxhall Corsa, parked on the public road, in an area where there is a lot of vehicle crime err... won't.

That kind of situation is quite common. My mate's fiancée past her bike test recently and the insurance was pricey - but went down when he added himself to her policy. I assume it's because an experienced driver (rider) will be at the controls for at least some of the time and therefore the risk is reduced.

At the end of the day, it's all about statistical risk.

I'm 30 and live over 200 miles from my parents, but managed to reduce my car insurance by £100 by adding them as named drivers.  No idea why that worked, but it's convenient for when they come visiting.

I would advise that you son blackbo does passpluss through his driving instructor he used. It costs £60 and is 3 2hour extra lessons about country lanes, motorways, towns you dont know, bad weather driving and a few other bits. I did it 10 years ago and some insurance companies still discount me now 10years on for doing it. I think I saved 1k alone in the first year. Must have saved about £2500 in total. Thats a good return on £60!

Adding a female to the policy sometimes helps, sometimes doesnt. also try lowering the estimated average mileage down by 1k, it might just pop him into the lower threshold.

Just keep shopping around and try a insurance co in a high street. Thats where I got my years first insruance as they came in alot cheaper and you can sit down and haggle and tweek the policy to get the best deal.

I used to have that Rob, but once you turn 21, it will decrease. Mine did, I'm fortunate now in that anything like that I can put on my trade insurance. But my insurance on ASBO did significantly decrease when I turned 21.

Be warned - Admiral companies have a little clause in their policy that lets them keep taking your premiums at renewal unless you tell them not to when you get the notification letter.

I told them not to take mine when I was with Elephant, but they did it just the same and it was a real hassle to get my money back. I won't use any of Admiral's brands now for that reason.

I now get a new switch card every year so if they try that trick the money wont go through anyway as expiry date etc will be wrong.  ;)

My brother recently passed his test. He told his insurer, Norwich Union, expecting it to go up but they said no extra charge. They might be worth a try?
Im with Direct Line who give me a really good price for a 22 year old with a 200bhp GTI
In my experience comparison websites rip you off.

I had a shock yesterday. Solihull Mick is fitting a V8 in my series so I rang the company up to see how much they're go to sting me for.

Lot's of questions - how much is the horsepower increase (almost 100% increase), have I uprated the brakes (no) etc.

The end result was almost a 10% increase in my premium. I'm now paying £108 per year for a two car policy. Outrageous.....

I'll get me coat.
