I have a disco 200Tdi in my Defender 90. When I fitted it I kept the Disco power steering pump and used the defender reservoir and steering box. Got hoses made up by Pirtek and it all works well.
Except the Defender screw top reservoir leaks fluid from round the cap. At the MOT this year the tester gave an advisory statement about a possible fluid leak, but he couldn't find the leak just evidence of fluid about. I had a look at the Disco reservoir in the garage today and it seems to be a much more 'pressure vessel' type thing with a sealed top and lots of curves. The defender one is just like a big screw top tin.
Does anyone know, does the disco pump pressurise the reservoir for some reason and could this be causing the fluid to leak from the defender reservoir?
Looking forward to hundreds of helpful replies, thanks in advance

I have a 200Tdi Defender and a 200TDI disco engine sat in the garage. I just went and had a look.
The Pumps seems to be just the same. The only difference is the location of the pipe connections.
I don't think it should be pushing fluid up past the reservoir regardless of the pump used. I would not say its the pump at fault. Its a pump so its designed to pump fluid at pressure into the PAS box.
Sounds like a problem with the PAS box or the lid on the reservoir.
I have ran mine with the lid off when I changed the fluid. It did bubble a bit as the air came out the system, but after that it settled down and never goes up or down now.
It could also be a small split in the pipe leading to the reservoir?

just a thought, did you get the hoses the right way round on the reservoir?

if its the old tin can type then there rubbish for leaking anyhow

I agree, I have got the old tin one and it comes out the cap. I found one on ebay for £10 delivered.
