We've just inherited some old oak furniture, unfortunatley the person who it belonged to was a heavy smoker - is there a way of getting the smell out of the wood... Thanks for any help ;)

If its untreated a 50/50 mix of white spirit and boiled linseed oil, rub lighlty with fine wire wool, it will clean and revive the wood, try on a bit you wont see, as every bit of furniture is different, finish with a light wax and buff. This can work on varnished wood, but depends on age and varnish.

I have some Pledge Furnitre/woodwork "wash" that you mix with water thats ok for cleaning really dirty wood, came from supermarket. But read the instructions etc.

you could use white vinager to remove it as long as its got varnish on it dont want to use oil if its untreated as this will soak ing and if it wants to be stained or varnished it will pickle we make butchers blocks and farm house kitchens if this is any help

50/50 oil and turps works wonders for cleaning and staining any scratches then a good bees/carnuba wax polish ( 2 years at the school of furniture in Manchester) ;) don't go too heavy with wire wool or the wood will end up dull and don't use it at all on sharp edges or they will go light and the furniture will lose it's aged look .

Sounds like a job I could make a mess of... :? I think maybe I'd better pay someone else to do it.

I have used liquid shoe polish to stain wood before now. I had a small pile of bits of trim to go on some shelves, and didn't fancy the mess of trying to stain them properly so in an experimental mood put on some gloves and applied dark brown polish to them. Worked a treat, they came out a mid brown shade that looks good with the rest of the shelving.

if your not sure just use a soft cloth to wipe the wood over with a 50/50 mix of linseed oil and turps (proper turps) mixed in an old coffee jar leave the cloth in the jar and store the mix, if you make up a jar full it lasts for years just give it a shake before using it .. leave it for a few hours then buff up with a soft cloth . theres no way you can damage it with a cloth and it will look and smell better ;)
