Title: HELP - how to get oil off the drive!
Post by: Disco-andy on May 21, 2009, 11:02:21
I just changed the oil in 90, had had over flowed the catch tray I was using. my girl friend is home about 3 and there's a large oil stain on the drive( her house not mine!)

I have wiped up the worst of it and now covered in sand to soak up as much as possible,

Any one got any ideas on what might clean it up?

Its an old concrete drive.

thanks Andy

But on the positive side I worked out what the funny noise in the 90 was.

Try cornflour to absorb the stain then wash away.

half a gallon of hyper clean and a stiff brush normally works fine.

Neat washing up liquid or swarfega type had cleaner and then scrub it with a yard brush or hard scrubbing brush etc.

If you can lay your hands on it TFR (Traffic Film Remover) or caustic soda will break down the oil even further.

Dave's gourmet insanity chili sauce, says on the label:

A great cooking ingredient for sauces, soups and stews. Also strips waxed floors and removes driveway satins ENJOY

Its VERY potent, one drop will bring out the sweats in most folk.

I used gunk driveway cleaner from Halfords.

Beware that some other home remedies may not be very environmentally friendly. (Not saying any of the above arnt though)

And dont use anything on tarac that says its not specifically for tarmac.

I normally find the best way of keeping oil off driveway is to park on the road.

   :?

Hi

a cheap and reasonably effective way is to have  a bucket of warm water with washing up liquid in it standing by and then pour a bottle of coke or equivalent product over the oil spill.  the coke lifts out the oil and use the water with washing up liquid to swill it away.  several applications will remove most of the junk!

regards

My problem is how to get oil out of a light coloured living room carpet  :'(

Needless to say I'm not too popular with the management  It's not my fault the damn dog walked through
the 'small' oil spill and then wandered round the living room.

Try a specialst product from the cleaning bit in the super market or Lakeland Plastics. Usually buy the most expensive in smallest bottle if the carpet is worth it. Lesser solutions may just spread it around. I had a tar remover once and it was amazing after I got tar on my brand new carpet (not my fault, hot day)

Get a few litres of old engine oil and just paint the whole driveway with it.  That way it'll never show up any future stains.
