Title: 300 tdi engine swap
Post by: mrsbrumie on May 25, 2009, 08:38:41
Hello all,
Started to do the engine swap on Sara's old disco yesterday got the engine out of the donor & started to undo everything on the blown one & have just realised that the blown one has the later type of fuel pump & air filter (electronic) now my question's are:-

Can i just do away with the electronic bits & put the donor engine complete with pump etc straight in ?

Also the donor engine has come out of a manual & is going into an auto anyone know of any major problems I may encounter ?

Thanks in advance

John

the gear box shouldn really matter as long as its same power, as for fuel pump i not 100% sure but think u should be ok as long as the engine is identical what engine you putting in

all you will need to do is put the torque converter on the new engine instead of the clutch plate. Also you will need to fit the different linkage for the foot pedal otherwise you wont get kick down but I left the manaul one on and left the kick down off. Makes a vast improvement on mpg and it doesnt change up and down all the time on hills. It holds it in gear that little longer.

John,

This kinda depends on whether the auto vehicle has EDC, or not. If it does then you'll need to use the electronically controlled fuel pump, etc., or the control system won't be able to meter the fuel correctly. Also, EDC engines have several additional temperature sensors fitted and you might have to swap the cylinder heads over to get those.

If you've got a copy of RAVE take a look at the differences in the workshop manuals.

Hi, Thanks for the replys,

The engine that is going is is a 300tdi from a R reg

Really hoping that I dont have to change pump's etc as I have a feeling that the pump was playing up before th engine died, used to misfire when you tryed to accelerate hard or get the kickdown to 'kick in' also don't know how much internal damage was done when it hydraulicked

As for the kickdown cable hopefully I can fabricate a bracket for that,

James was your electronic ?

Well wish me luck as I'm going to see if I can get the blown engine out over the wekend & swap some bits over ready to put the new  one in  [-o<

I had a cable kickdown.

it is really easy to swap the bits over if it is cable. just remove the bolt from the throttle cable linkage that goes onto the engine, keep a note of the order of the parts are in and put onto new engine.

But I really wouldnt bother with the kick down. As I said befre, it drives SO much better without it. If you need kickdown just pull the gear lever back a gear. does the same thing.

Hi again,
Got the engine in & all bolted up over the weekend , only problem I have now is the wiring being different plugs  :?, plan is to just get the stop solenoid to work off the ignition but haven't got a clue about electronics, no fuel getting through  will fire up & run on easystart.

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks in advance

With the non EDC 300 TDi you can adjust how "agressive" the kickdown is, because there are 4 positions for the cable to connect to the operating "horn".

On my sister's I moved it out to the last one and adjuysted the cable acordingly, now it kicks down much later.  Of course it has been tweaked so it's got more grunt when solo and with the 'van on you just have to stamp on the pedla to make it go anyway.

Og course, you'll remember how well it goes won't you ;)

I took off the original wiring loom and fitted mine back on so the plugs all match up.

As for the ignitio. Try running a cable direct from the battery to stop solonoid. Thats how mine started. I now have a switch in the car to control the stop solonoid. Its great when you forget something in the house. Take the key out and the engine carries on running. saves on fuel! legal too though! passed 2 mots like it now. good security device as well.

By legal I assume you means it passes the MOT like that, but it is against the law to leave a parked car and not switch off the engine

Wish it was that simple, the new engine & pump has two pulgs on it with 3 wires to each plug so really confused now

The pump on the 'new' engine has 2 plugs both with 3 wires  , so decided to change fuel pumps over IE:- use the 'EDC' fuel pump, any advise as to changing pumps would be appreciated, how do I know for certain I have tdc ? etc etc

Thanks again
