Title: 200tdi engine troubles

hi all

 i have a 200tdi defender that has lost power at top end  it hits 65/70mph and goes flat and puffs out loads of black smoke. allso the temp is all over the place some days it will run fine other days it will run hot??

what could be the things to check?

intercooler pipes?
timing?

Have you played with the pump?
could try cleaning out the inter cooler and pipes, will give you a chance to inspect them.
