any of the mechanical clever clogs on this site know how much play there should be on the pulley bearings for the alternator/water pump drive belt tensioner?
I've got a horrible whiney, wirring noise going on that has slowly being getting worse over the last few weeks and I've gone throught the following:-
water pump - nope is still good
alternator - could be but they bloomin expensive and I don't want to change it without checking everything else 8-[
belt tensioner - it's holding tension but the pulley itself can be "rocked" from side to side in situ hence my question.
cheers

sounds like the normal belt tensioner thing, yes the barings can be changed, and is the cheapest option. try ebay for parts.
have a search round there are loads of post on this

There shouldn't be any noticeable play in it. It could be on it's way out because the play will undoubtledly have caused the seals to wear out too.

Here's a nice link to a step by step guide to changing the bearings.
hope it helps,
Mark.

Don't leave it too long before you sort it out, if there is too much play then the belt can jump of the pulleys and shred itself.

many thanks to the fine body of men that replied - but it defo lols like it's the alternator thats giving up , so it's time to spend some ( more??) money on the old girl

a good tip to find which bearing is on the way out is to get a long screw driver, put the end on the bolt that holds the bearings on and put your ear to the screw driver head. if there is a noise that bearing has gone, no noise and it is fine. It is a bit like a glass to a wall to spy on next door!!! Works really well and I'm not joking. just dont slip and get your ear chopped off in the engine! ;)

I changed mine and my alternator and the noise was till there.
The belt was dirty along with the pulleys, you have too gently wire brush until all build up has gone-fine now
