Hi All, picked up a Nato hitch the other day and would like to strip the several layers of paint off.
What would be the best way :?:
-
blowtorch .... or any good paint-striper chemical. just don't breath any fumes in if using blowtorch method  and use gloves if using fluid
-
9" angle grinder with one of them big wire brushes on it. Wear a mask and safety goggles.

Just remember to re-grease the joints afterwards

Thanks guys.

Give it too me, I'll take it into work and leave it in one of our solvent barrels for a few days, it'll come up like new
-
I always use nitromors as this gets right down to the first coat first time.
-
I wish I could Andy, :)
Just spent an hour cleaning the mud out of it :o still not clean though.
-
can u not soak it in paint stripper?
surely there is something on the market that can do this?
-
Chris poured petrol all over his sankey and set fire to it :(bigshock): . mite work certainly spectualr :(bigsmoke): .
-
Yeah S.Y.L will got buy some stuff tomorrow.
Should all the bits arrowed move freely though.
Here's a picture of the one I got.
-
Well your quite welcome to send it up too me Colin
The paint on there is no doubt years old, may take several coats of even the best paint stripper to completely remove all traces. Left soaking is your best bet. We have metal weighing plates and lids which we use to cover the paint batches at work. Over the year they tend to get cover in many layers, so once a year over the christmas shut down they are soaked in solvent, needless to say when we go back they are completely stripped :D

would the solvents disolve bodys aswell?

I strip mine right down, wire brush them and paint with Hammerite (not what it used to be). They look fine until you use them, I wonder why I bother :?

Has that hook got a swivel base as well, or a fixed one. If your sankey has a 360 degree eye, no probs
-
Agree, no matter what you repaint them with around the inside jaw and the top locking part it will be rubbed off with use, even new ones.
-
Hi Kev, hook swivels in base very smoothly. :)
Thanks for all the advice guys.
