I have just accquired a 1994 Defender 90....Truck cab with Ivor Williams canopy....
So questions are as follows
Does anyone make a winch bumper that will sit far enough back so that the
winch it's self can be hidden behind the front grill
or as close as possible ?
This bumper has to be of the square type, NOT these horrible tubular things....
At present it is running on a set of "modulator rims with some mild ATs on...
I have also the Land Rover OE steel rims........but they need shot-blasting and a respray.......
Has anyone got a paint code for the white/ivory paint that was used on the OE rims ?
I am thinking of fitting a 2" lift........!
Do i need to invest in correction radius arms or "other" heavy metal items ?
What size tyre could I go up to without the need to cut /bend the car. ?
Saying that what is the standard tyre size for a 1994 90 ?

If you lift 2" then you get intot the castor correction "debate"
Some says "no"
I says "proabably"
A 2" lift gets rid of all 3 degrees of castor that LR put there, you might like it as it is, you might prefer to correct it, I got sick of it eating tyres and handling badly. I'm glad I did it but it will cost more than the arms, once they're on you'll be wanting a Cardan joineted fron tprop at another £200 odd.
Or go for a 1" lift and leave well alone.

Go for the modular rims they have an offset which will allow 265/75x16 tyres and still get full lock!
I think D44 do a bumper simular to what you're after.
I'm still unsure about lifts. It will raise your chassis but in ruts your axles are still going to ground out. As RRB says there's a lot more to it than just fitting longer springs. Is it worth it? Depends on what you are going to use it for of course.

If you lift it by 2" as i have, you can fit 35" tyres with little or no rubbing provided you get the right rims or use wheel spacers.
Or you could fit a 33" tyre that would get better steering locah and give you some more ground clearance under the diff.
The only use of a suspension lift is if you are going to fit bigger tyres, if it is just for looks then dont do it!

Mines lifted 2" and i've just fitted some 285/75/16 kumho kL71's.
Tbh it steers really badly and my next purchase will be some castor correction arms.
I say leave it at standard height and fit some 235/85/16's or 265/75/16's tyres they will cope at most pay and play sites and will be more than capable on green lanes just stay out of deep ruts

As I'd like to keep the changes as subtle as poss
The sale of the modulars will help pay for the new rubber

How much space is there behind the grill on yours?
All the standard defenders I've seen have relativerly little space between the grill and radiator compared to a RRC or disco, so to fit a winch behind the grill would likely require moving the radiator to make space.

I'm assuming the HD ones are simply a greater rate? I would generally only suggest these if you anticipate a lot of towing or you want to carry a heavy load frequently.

I've now decided to forgo the winch bumper & winch
Out is the 2" lift with all the issues that come with doing lifts..........Been there on the Disco
Incomng..........
Steering guard
Front & rear Diff guards (QT's)
Front (MOD spec) Jate rings, to match the pair on the rear
235/85/16 AT's to go on the repainted OE steels
Jackable side sills (rock sliders, but without the tree slider part)
HD springs...........weight to be hauled in the rear tub needs a bit extra wellie..... :shock:

I 've decided to try and keep a low profile on this motor as it'll be used on the farm where I work (Cows & Sheep herding)
and will have to fit in with the "farming set" at the local YFC meets
A fully kited & lifted 90 could raise a few eyebrows

Given the choice I would fit tree sliders. I fitted rock sliders to mine. Wish I'd got tree sliders now!

Ive got tree sliders and it does make it a PITA to get out in tight car parking spaces.
Having said that........ at least my doors are not all bent from rubbing against trees!
