Post by: skippy22 on June 26, 2009, 17:35:31
Hello everyone im new to this so sorry if i seem stupid

i have a 1997 p38 dse auto which doesnt like starting, its the same hot and cold, i put new glow plugs in today and still not helping, if i let the light only go out once it dont seem to want to start at all (well does but takes about 20 seconds) but if i let the glow plug light go out 3 time it is abit easier still takes about 10 seconds,
i been told these are known for problem starting when hot but this is as bad when cold so if anyone can help it would be good, also it smoke abit when started,

thanks

Sounds like the glowplugs are working after a fasion but I'd still check all the fuses etc.

My mate had a problem with a Trnsit TDi, would start cold, start hot but if he left it 10 minutes it wouldn't start.  the reason I mention it is the cause was piston ring wear, ie low compression.

Another thought it "how good is your battery?"

u need to fit a relay / risistor in the glow plug loom

Hi these also suffer with fuel pump failure problems there is an electric pump in the fuel tank if this fails it will give you the symptoms you describe fairly common fault, also it sometimes may start ok if the fuel level is above a certain level, this fault also affects the omega and the bmw models fitted with the same lump. simple check just see if you can here the pump running with the engine running. Or put a feed to pump fuse with the engine off.

Hope that helps
