Easy really, lend me your Rangie and ill show you how its done    Funny though, i doesnt mention this in the Haynes Manual... :?
What happened, was it was cross axeled badly on a steep hill, i put her in reverse to come back down or to get her moveing when the N/S/R wheel was clear of the ground then sudenly came in contact with mother earth whilst at the same time came in contact with a imoveable object and the sudden jolt on the running gear when everything suddenly stop moveing caused something to give. Not the UJs not the prop it self and not even the halfshafts were damaged, just the Crown wheel and pinion decided to escape via the diff caseing. But whilst all this was going on DPG and macca was trying to stop the Rangie from tipping over. My mistake ill learn we all have days like this...... i hope.

I've heard of halfshafts and the like busting when spinning a wheel that then touches down, but never a diff!  Maybee it was it's time.

If you can't get a diff I know a place you can try near me (I don't mean my shed).

Is chapel gate the one with a strip of tarmac no wider than a 'G' string?  If so I remember that one, my a**e was gripping the seat going up there, and it looks worse now in your pictures.  Maybe we should go up there and shovel that tarmac into the troughs before someone really comes a cropper.

 Yep i think it was its time, and yes Chapel Gate is the one with strips of tarmac running down. Ive done this route last year in my old Suzuki sj with no probs, but since then it really has got chewed up and is nasty in places. To be honest in hindsight i shouldnt have gone up but in the spure of the moment...  Whilst trying to get the Rangie back down, macca and DPG were actually breaking up some of the tarmac and filling in some of the ruts to help stop the rangie from tipping over. Infact now i think about it. It was a stupid thing to do but you live and learn. And it certainly could do with a work party up there to do some maintanence before someone does come a cropper. You see Chapel has got me before but i didnt learn to stay away, that time i was on my mountain bike charging down with DPG in tow, and yep over the handle bars at about 20mph on the ruff steep section. Got away with just a cut above my eye and some grazes, but this route just keeps calling me back for more..
:D Ill be intouch about the Diff in a couple of days if i cant get one locally.
Just add if anyone is thinking of doing this route in the near future Beware its Ruff. Proberbly o.k in the dry.

My QT Diff guard kept the bits in when mine went although it still holed the diff casing.
It shattered the carrier and released the pins that came out like bullets.

It's all down to hitting the loud pedal with no grip and then a wheel gets some grip and BANG!
Either the halfshafts go, the diff goes or something happens to the trailing arms and prop.
Cue Bev......

Ouch - that looks painful :(

chapel gate has really got bad recently.  i went up it a couple of weeks ago and it was much worse than i went with Range rover blues in late january.

i'm not convinced that coming down it would be any easier - down right scary on that nasty side slope bit.  perhaps i'd better go and try it

did you do roych?

Roych aint the lane it used to be thats for sure :(
It's holding up very well, no sign off deterioration yet :(

Had an epic up there 3 weeks ago in the snowdrifts - foolishly decided to do it and spent a few hours going a 100 feet through 6 foot snow drifts.  Lots of digging, winching, and setting up ground anchors (which weren't holding for more than 10 ft)
Still it was good fun and we did it

 Hi all, ive just spent most of the day and DPGs welding skills, fixing the rear diff and diff pan on the Rangie. Everything went to plan the Pan was welded up after removeing the bust diff ( o.h and it was well mashed ) couldnt be bothered getting a new one and DPG said it would not be a problem to weld from the inside as it was good clean metal ( quality of the metal was a bit naff typical Range Rover B/L metal )
After DPG had welded up the pan i finnished it of on the outside with plenty of sealant over the welded bits, which has done the trick no leaks. The i put the rear prop back on, then put the rear halfshafts back in put fresh diff oil in and took it for a test drive up and down the yard at DPGs garrage. :D  :D  The replacement diff came from what we think is an early Disco Front Unit, we noticed there was hardly any ware and tare on the Crown or the Pinion and so whilst test driveing it there is no backlash in the rear what so ever  :D BRILLIANT  :D  So heres a tip for you, if you need to replace either diff in your Classic Rangie or Early Disco use a Disco front diff as they seem to be a lot better for ware and tare etc, proberbly due because the Front diffs are not under as much pressure as the rears...
Anyway i gave it a wash fitted new C.B but as me and DPG were about to leave we noticed the front radious arm bushes have gone    I only fitted new ones 6 months ago.    Must have done it on Chapel Gate on Sunday, cheap and nasty spurious ones, :(  didnt last long.
 So my job for tomorrow is to get a set of new ones and fit them, and theres me looking forward to an easy day....

.that 90 you got looks smart is it a tdi?

Eerr, no, it's a bit like yours really. The chassis is 1997 300 tdi, the body panels are all from different vehicles, seats are ford, steering wheel from larkspeed, axles are range rover, the list goes on, the engine is the original TD. 180,000 miles and overdue a rebuild now!!!
Not sure at what point it stops being A 1990 90(or a 19whatever series 2) and starts being something else!!

Is that still true when parts have been replaced like for like?

Removes lid and runs away from worms.....

Woah, you do like starting thing off dont you!

Like for like is broken engine replaced with same, or axle etc, I should imagine not, but the thing is with Land rover parts they are so interchangeable, and like you said could lead to a right can of worms

Grey area or what

You swapped the chassis...  and unless you did it with a genuine *new* part and have the receipts to prove it, then you ought to get it tested and a new plate issued.

The vast majority of "hybrid" vehicles are on technically illegal plates.  Those who are claiming tax exemption have been coming under ever-increasing scrutiny just lately by the DVLA, and they don't take kindly to what they consider licence evasion.

No I never!

You'd do very well to prove it's not original too.

Well, OK.. the chassis has been swapped.

I don't want to prove anything... I don't make the rules  :?

When I said you. I didn't mean you personally. Although you've more chance than most government inspectors I would have thought.

Just been reading through your link, typically government department complicated.  Seems I've broken more laws in my time than I previously thought. Off to hide under the bed now.

Fail to see what the issue is providing you're not doing it for any gain, and it's registered to the right person, not stolen etc etc. Number plates a number plate to me.

The Q plate is so that the Insurance companies can pick all of your pockets.

The Q plate has been around for a long time and it was to allow enthusiasts to register road legal vehicles which had been built from kits, etc.

It (theoretically at least) protects car buyers too, as they know the vehicle has been radically altered or rebuilt.

The insurance companies do tend to use it to hike premiums (what's new), which is daft really... the SVA is a far tougher test and the vehicle needs to be in much better condition.

I'd put good money that a high percentage of vehicles owned by MC members wouldn't pass it.

There used to be a bloke living about 30 miles away from me who had a yard and about 20 series landies in there. Every month or so he would make a good one out of all of them and sell it and get some more breakers in and so forth.......
He got busted and spent 18 months inside.
An extremely grey area.

I thought the DVLA points system would just about allow a chassis swap sans reregistering, however it's a fairly close call and swapping anything else (as well) is questionable.

At the end of the day the Q-Plate is used to determine vehicles of indeterminate age of manufacture, or other oddities.  If you sufficiently modify a vehicle that it should be re-registered, then it has to be re-registered..

Addmitedly the insurance company will hike the price up, but then again they do that if you add spotlights, stickers, furry dice or drive it wearing an expensive coat.

If, God forbid you are in an accident and haven't kept to within the letter of the law, do you really believe the insurance company will say "well, technically he was driving an illigal vehicle, and it wasn't the one he insured, but it's a nice day and I've just had a lovely coconut ring biscuit.. let's pay out anyway" ?

Somehow I think not.  You have to have insurance in this country, and that insurance *has* to be for the vehicle in question; by vehicle in question there is no grey area, being the same colour isn't good enough.  If you are in any doubt, ring the DVLA and ask, they, curiously enough have catered for people changing chassis, engine etc...

Nope, sorry :-(

Specific mention is made to swapping chassis for anything other than a new replacement from the vehicle manufacturer.

ahh... depends on "chassis swap"

sorry, wasn't really reading the thread     I thought it was a "like for like", i.e. series chassis for a series chassis.  Again I though that "manufacturer" was a little oddly defined, as in a designa chassis would suffice..

still, I might be wrong as I hadn't investigated the options to any great degree, i.e. sufficient to actually think about doing it.

"A new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer/manufacturer (e.g. receipt)"

You need to be able to prove that the new chassis is made to LR specs and is new.   Then you should be OK.

Quote
"If a second-hand chassis/monocoque bodyshell is used, the vehicle must pass a ESVA/SVA test after which a "Q" prefix registration number will be allocated."

So you can't do a chassis swap with a used chassis without an SVA.

Or use the registration of the donor chassis...

which is deemed vaugely acceptible, as I read it..

But, then it wouldn't be tax exempt, which, unless it's a rangie with a funny body shell a coiled motor woulnd't be anyhow...

Yes you do find people like norwich union good for a laugh when you ask something like a landy, I had a toyota lite ace mpv a couple of years ago, it was an import, if i took their figure it would have been cheaper to drive around uninsured and no tax and accept the fines :?
