Title: Defender 90 Steering problem
Post by: potato head on July 02, 2009, 19:46:27
Hi Guys,

First post so please be kind  ;)

I have a Defender 90 that has suddenly become a problem to steer. It has really heavy on the front end and the steering is not self centering when the wheel is released after going round a bend. When I start it up with the steering wheel slightly turned I can feel the power steering coming into play but when driving it seams a little slow in the movement responce time.
Is there anything specific that could cause this that i should look at?

Thanks
PH

Check the steering column universal joints. One or both of them may be seized.

I had the same problem with mine when i got it!!

Turned out 1 of the uj's on the steering linkage had seized (as already stated)! Also the bottom bearing in the steering colum had seized!

I've got a similar problem myself. Only had the 110 3 weeks now and still ironing out all the little Gremlins

The steering does feel a little heavy and as mentioned above it doesn't freely self centre. There was a lot of play in the pump and the steering column was actually loose on the pump  but all thes have been addressed now. The other symptom is that it does seem a little 'twitchy' at times where it wants to follow the camber or truck ruts in the road but doesn't do so naturaly and seems to ignore them for a bit and then suddenly snap away. I do have both the ball joint and ball joint kit for both ends of the drag link as the gaiters are split but haven't changed these over yet. Just wondering if it is also likely to be the steering buffer as well? :-k

According to LR the steering shouldn't self-centre completely anyway.
