was out in the disco today and noticed a definate wobble/rumble at about 40mph goes at about 50 but returns at 65+ feels like the rear
end more than the front
prob uj maybe?
diff fubard?
simon :-k

i had a rear wheel bearing do the same sort of thing you say, only found out after i replaced both ujs,
jack the rear wheels and spin away, should spin with no noise, and have very lil free play top/bottom and side to side
-
wheel bearing you think then m8y?
wot sort of money are they?
best to change both i spose too?
easy job? (as used to suzuki's)

for me id check 1st,some might say other wise, funny things landys
as for how much i couldent tell you the right the price,i pay cost cos i work at a motor facters, not normally to much to worry about, around £20ish for a half decent make, but do jump a fair bit for oe ones,
they are easy,,note should be,,if there not to far gone its 15mins a side tops, but if its rusty,or got hot and melted then hours 8-[
i hope this helps you mate

Right guys finaly this morning got to lift up the back of the disco
no play in either rear wheels
but i did notice wot im thinking is to much slap in the rear diff pinion?
now its always had a clonk when changing gear just thought thats wot they did so thought nothing of it b4
but when both wheels are off the ground and you rotate the rear prop it moves about 1/2 inch(maybe less) before it clunks and the wheels start to move (then stop)
as said in a prevoius thread im more a suzuki man but im using the disco more and more for offroading and towing my buggy about
so it is gettin more use than before and im wondering if the rear diff is goosed
any help greatfully received

Not me :( saving my money to buy a 90 :D

If the uj's are ok, I'd pull the rear shafts out, it makes it much easier to check bearings for noise, or jack it up and get someone to drive it through the gears , while you listen for noise, diff backlash sounds about right .
-
excuse my ignorance
wud we have to lift all 4 wheels off the ground to test the back axle?
simon
-
You only need to lift the rear , just make sure it's NOT in diff lock, also make sure it's safe, I use r/sleepers as blocks.

prob get slaughtered for this but i use my 3 tonne fork truck :-$
-
thats cheating lol . . . mines got the problem with the movement in the props and clunking wen pulling off etc ive put mine down to the transfer box . . .
-
so both you guys says the backlass (sorry i knew it had a proper name) is about right
and if both rear wheels spin freely ok so bearings are ok
wot can the problem be?
simon
-
Could be a knackered UJ on the rear prop if it is not a wheel bearing, or possibly (but unlikely) a bearing in the transfer gearbox.
-
wud it be better to remove the rear prop to check its uj's as cant feel anything while its connected?
thanx guys
-
You shoudn't need to remove the prop. It will be fairly obvious if there is a badly knackered UJ on there, as the flang for the propshaft will move up and down along the 'arms' of the UJ spider if the needle rollers are FUBAR'ed.

Its not something silly like mud and crap between the brake disc and the dust guard on the hub is it? If you want to give me a call, Im still at the workshop so the phone is still on and I can try and help mate.
-
hi JD
many thanx for the offer but its the weekend and i wudnt bother anyone over a weekend
ill drop off the rear axle and have a look see
dont think its mud or crud again wheel moves freely so that wud suggest to me its all ok?
simon

Sounds a bit like mine when it got water intot the hub, the wheel bearings rusted even though there was no play it sounded awful, especially on bends.
-
it may be an easy fix, but, balance the rear wheels.
if it was the diff, it would be whining and clunking at all speeds.
if it was bearing trouble it would hum at all speeds and increase in volume with more speed.
clunking on gear changes is a worn layshaft from the gearbox to the transfer box.... common problem really.
a wheel that is out of balance by 10 gramms would have the effect or 3 kilograms hitting the road at 60mph, my advice is to balance the wheels...
and its cheap and easy!!!!! worth a try!!
-
cheers matt
ill take them to my local tyre guys see wot there like

I had a strange wobble coming off mine until i got the wheels balanced and changed the prop uj's (they were seized) it now drive's so smooth. I have got the horrible job of doing the CV's next.
-
right guys have swapped the wheels still the same have changed the diff oil still the same
as above i think its the prob uj's as ive noticed its worse when you come off the gogo pedal
simon
-
right guys finaly ive been able to get under the disco (works always in the way lol) had a fumble about and found it
was the frnt prop uj by the t-case that had let go
so my m8 gelf came to the rescue with a new uj and fitted it for me so all is well again
apart from the rear shocker thats let go now
so many thanx to all for there comments
