Title: Oil Light Flashing
Post by: lee celtic on March 29, 2005, 20:21:45
Hi All

On the way back from Llangollen on Monday my oil light started to flicker at low revs so I stoped at the next bit of flat ground let the engines settle and checked the oil .   Loads of oil . :D

So I drove the rest of the way home . Today I had the oil and filter changed to see if that made a difference .

It didn't  still flickers at low revs .
So I guess the next thing to try is the oil pressure switch .
The question is where and how hard is it to remove/replace???

And if that don't work were and how hard is the pump to replace (and of course were is the best / cheapest place to get both items from??)

There we go then the switches have been flicked and the cogs are a werrin post when ready awaiting replies

Ps If you were the Camel trophy pilot that buzzed me while I was parked on the bridge over the river Dee at the back end of corwen and flashed your work lamp at me sorry for not flashing back I did wave with my free hand but the other on was holdin me chips and mushy peas. :D

2 questions, what engine is it and what did your temp gauge say?
It's fairly "normal" (on a petrol) for the oil light to flicker at high temp's at low rev's. If it's doing it when cold, then worry. And fix it. Quickly.
HTH.

It's a 200 tdi temp was fine and the engine was purring ,  :)
after the oil change the light did start to flicker at low revs  as soon as the engine was up to opperating temp  :?

That might be the answer then.

What grade oil did you put in ?  Was it mucho-wonga quality stuff, or cheapo-kwality stuff ?

<don't get me started on a rant about oils>

The oil is the same stuff it's had for it's last 4 oil changes from the same dealer (I go to a mate for oil changes he has a ramp at his tyre depot and only charges £12 for oil and filter change ) This is the first time the light has flickered ever and it has done it before and after an oil change . :?

so I think the next step is the switch or is there a pick up gauze that could be blocked in the sump ???

Ahh, sorry... I misunderstood what you said...  not paying attention again

The switch is a cheap enough change so might be worth a try.  Check / Clean the switch terminal too before you do much else... might be something as simple as that.

I'll need to check the exact location...  but switches are about £2.50, they should just screw in, and you can get them from your favourite suppliers of LR parts

Coming back from somewhere in the Cav (diesel) and the light was flickering on the mororway :o
Got home carefully and gave it a thourough going over.  Happily found that the wire to the switch had chaffed and was earthing to the Alternator bracket. :)   Worrying moment though.

Hi All

I spent this morning driving around trying to get a replacement switch no joy

It seems that it is a special order part at Halfrawds (£13.27) [-X  and I tried partco and C&A and the local landy place was shut but he would have charged a lot for it so I'm ordering on line and will have to do without the disco for a few days

Still while it's off the road I can pull a few bits off and get them powder coated at work  :D  :D  :D

Silver linings and all that  :D

well it's fixed  :D

After all that it was the oil presure switch after all

At least it's fixed now I had visions of missing the May day mud fest in bala at the end of the month so now all is well :D  :D

Thanks for the replies
