Title: DEFENDER TD5 CLUTCH PEDAL TRAVEL
Post by: Range Rover Ron on August 06, 2009, 13:06:00
Hello All,

I've got a Y2K TD5 Defender and I think the clutch grab position is a bit low,
I lift my foot up about an inch and it's away!

I've had a look through the Haynes manual and is says that the clutch is self adjusting (automatic).

On Tdi clutches you can measure the distance of the pedal to the floor and adjust to achieve 140mm but there is no such setting on the TD5.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated,
Ta,

Ron Wood.

Hey,

My clutch is very similar to what you are describing, lets hope it's supposed to be like that.

Mine is complete opposite, does not bite till the very top. Even the same with new clutch, fly wheel, master and slave cylinder.

The wife really struggles with it.

My 300tdi / r380 bites right at the top.

With the pedal down about 10mm, the engine revs freely

Been like it for the 3 years ive had it, and its never slipped once.

Hello guys,
thanks for the replys.

I checked through a couple of things so maybe I can help out with your problems,
fristly on mine I've found that the fluid was almost empty so either it has a leak or it's never been checked,
it's working better now, but I still have to find if there is a leak,
I might just renew slave and master cylinders, not really much money to do that and peace of mind!

One thing I looked at and you could check if you want to move the position is the clutch pedal position adjustment.
If you take a look just below the coolant container you will find a square box with six x head screws and a switch bracket attached.
Undo the six screws and move away the switch bracket,
you'll find  a nyloc nut on one end of a thread and two half, lock nuts on the top end.
depending on which way you need to go, either lengthen or shorten the stroke by losening and moving the nuts,
check the pedal for "grab" position and tighten up when happy.
Be careful when putting the plate back on as there is a rubber seal.
The bottom lefthand screw is a bit of a pain to get at but it can be done using a rachet type screw bit.

Hope that's helpfull.
