Hi guys and gals
Well its been quiet a while since my last post - Blame moving house and work for that one....however Im finally getting around to finishing my Series 3 and have question relating to the transfer box sump seal.
Ive just stripped it down to replace the leaking gasket and wondered whats the best way to put it all back together again.....is it
1. Just the standard gasket on metal to metal
2. Combination of gasket and sealant compund, such as Hylomar
3. Silicon sealant only (If so - what make and grade)
When i first brought the vehicle alot of the sumps were fitted with just a silicon sealant - it must have been the Army way.
any advice on the best solution would be greatfully recieved.

My freind has just replaced his, and only used the gasket. After a week they were leaking again. So i advised using the gasket, and Hylomar. Three weeks on, and no leaks. :dance:

A smear of grease on either mating surface and a standard gasket, should do the trick.

If the surfaces are good then all you should need is the gasket, if the surfaces aren't good then ultimately you'll never seal them. These days many in some applications manufacturers don't actually use gaskets instead they spec a bead of sealant instead but where a manufacturer specs a gasket use a gasket.

When I first had the motor every gasket face, such as sumps were covered with a white silicone type material....I thought this just because it was ex MoD. I notice there are plenty of gasket seals on the market, just wondered what was the best.
I have tried the gasket on its own and it leaks within a month. The faces on the sump and box are clean and good, and I have degreased them over the past few days.

If you want to use a sealant I think you'll find they are all very similar - you'd be amazed how many of these types of things come off the same production line and are actually formulated by the same guy/company.
If using silicon sealant the stuff you are looking for is RTV silicon, comes in many brands but DO NOT use bathroom or any other form of building sealant its is not the same stuff and gives off ammonia as it cures which corrodes things. Remember all those 1980s after market sunroofs tat were rusted themselves out - put in by cowboys (there were a lot back then) with the wrong sealant.
