Title: Front shock turrets
Post by: V8MoneyPit on August 26, 2009, 19:17:44
Hi all

I've got some tubular standard height shock turrets fitted. When I come to offer up the inner wings, they foul the hole where the standard turret passes through. It makes the whole wing assembly lean inwards! These particular turrets came from Paddocks.

Anyone else found this or am I being thick?

I remember some rather tasty shock turrets featured in one of the mags some time ago (just after I bought these ones ). They were made using 4 vertical curved plates and they were pictured in yellow. Any ideas?

I might just go back to the standard ones for now, just to get the job done. I'll see if I can find them in the workshop, but I did a scrap run last week

Ah yes, they're the ones. Thanks.

I'll see if I can find out exactly what the problem is before I go buying something else though!

I've got the paddock tubular ones fitted. They've got clearance all round. Maybe once your wings are bolted up to the front panel they will be ok.

Thanks Rich. I'll have another go tonight. I might have done something daft.... it wouldn't be the first time!

Here's a pic showing the foul.

Are there differences between inner wings or are they all the same in respect to this area?

If I fit the front panel, I have to heave the top of the wings outwards. This increases the interferance with the turrets. I'm then just distorting the inner wings. I must be missing something obvious, but I'll be damned if I can see it!

i know its a little diffenent but i had to trim the ar hes on my disco when i fitted the -1" mounts, still have them infact if you want to fit twin dampers or move the damper outside the spring ;)

Thanks for the offer mate, but I think I'm going to modify the turrets to clear the inner wing. I've just been playing and fitted the wings without the turrets and they all line up perfectly..... well, as perfectly as you can expect from a Land Rover

Offering up the O/S turret it fouls by about 1/2"  I can narrow the tube a little and maybe rotate them and redrill the spring tower to get enough clearance. Or I'll have to modify the inner wing which is an odd shape to replicate.

Anyway, I've enough for this evening. I'm going home! I'll have another think tomorrow when my brain stops aching  :D

Have you tried turning them through 90 degrees?

I've Gwyn Lewis challenge turrets on mine and +5.5 shocks, they come throught the hole quite a way but with no fouling, and are angled inwards slightly to help prevent the shocks fouling on articulation:

Another thought ...There not handed are they?, the ones on mine are

Thanks for the thoughts.

You can't turn the turrets 90 degrees. The holes aren't equally spaced. I did concider redrilling the spring towers, but it wouldn't make enough difference to clear.

They don't seem to be handed, but I'll take another look.

My Paddock's ones fouled the inner arch on the RRC.

I've now cut the tubes and rotated one of them to get them to fit. I've redrilled the spring tower on the LH one to allow it to rotate. And a couple of the tubes are now 'D' shaped to give clearance.

Apologies for digging up my old thread, but the saga continues

Now I've found the caps don't fit over the Paddocks shock towers

So, I've given up with them and ordered a pair of Douglas Motors ones. They insist theirs slot straight in. I do hope so.

Are yours the shorter ones or standard height?

Mine fit too. They're standard height.

Did you use the standard spring tower holes? I had to redrill and swing it round to even get clearance to the inner wing hole (see the picture further up the thread).

Could be you had a faulty pair Steve, or your spring seats on the chassis are out!!!!!!!

Id go with the faulty turrets, did you try putting your standard turrets in?

Unfortunately, they were taken with the scrap a while ago. The problem only really exists because the tubular ones are rather bigger around the top than the standard ones. Anyway, we'll see what happens with the new ones.

Just a quick update....

The Douglas Motors ones fit a treat and look lurverly  :D Incidentally, when stood next to the Paddocks ones, they are nearly an inch taller. I'm guessing they are more like the originals than the tubular Paddocks ones.

And the caps fit over with plenty of space.

Now on to the next problem part...... OE oil cooler pipe that doesn't fit
