Title: Smoky TDi
Post by: Range Rover Blues on August 31, 2009, 21:01:49
Quick question for the Deisel gurus, our TDi is running ok, just that if I've been driving "carefully" for a while then I pull away from traffic lights or roundabouts for example it smokes like the proverbial.

Is there anything I should be checking?

It's still got the particl filter in the exhaust but has a 1 box sport/utility system fitted, big intercooler and I know the pump has been tweaked but not how.  Head is skimmed and the injectors are brand new.

138,000miles recorded.

Any suggestions?

I'd say it was normal for a tweaked motor with a bigger inter-cooler. All the ones I've followed chucked black smoke out when under load especially. Anything other than black smoke then I'd say you definitely have fueling issues.

Give it death occasionally,it will blow the cobwebs out of the exhaust

Put a new air filter in and a bottle of fuel treatment in the tank and see how thing go.

Ok, thanks guys.  the Air filter is a K&N which I've just cleaned so I'll see how that goes.

I find adding some veg oil like an additive helps to clean out (and keep clear) your fuel system ;), but keep a close eye on your filters as they can become blocked quickly when you start to use veg, due to it removing residues from your tank and fuel lines.

if the pumps been tweaked it will do it a bit. mines the same. veg oil definitely makes a difference. the pumps probably been messed with with the old diaphragm trick and that. its a few minute job to turn it back.
