Title: Fitting damper with sumo bars
Post by: clover on September 11, 2009, 14:57:03
Hi

Right I'm going to have to change the steering damper on my Discovery. I've got it mounted on the front like Defender. Its been leaking oil for a little while and now has stopped and I'm getting steering wobble over 50mph.

I got a pro comp one to go on.

Question is this...

I am a bit concerning that its not been setup right and that is why my bilstein has gone tits up. When I set it up I fitted it so it still had a bit travel left in it when it was fully compressed on full lock. Is this right and its just down to me driving it too hard?

I am going to have to check other stuff if the wobble is still there.

No suspension lift just a body lift.

Cheers...

Not the steering damper! Damn! Its time to check the swivel pretensions but I have a feeling its the hockey stick bushes or the steering arm bush are at fault?

Any suggestions?

If it is wheel wobble, it may be something simple such as wheel balancing or tracking.

alright john

this may seem silly but I was wondering if when you had poped the rim the first time had any of that clumpy mud got on the inside of the tyre and they never got it out at the tyre place. just having a guess. Is this something related to the steering problem you had or is that sorted now ?

I hope its the hocky sticks so I get to use my new vice lol

I've tried different tire combinations swapped the front for the spare, tried swapping them front to rear.

I don't think its a wheel out of balance.

Could it possibly be the nut behind the wheel?

if its 45/50 mph then maybe have a look at the prop uj's , other than that wheel bearings will be wobbling at 50, if you have to push a little more than normal on the brakes thats a sign of wheel bearings .

id check those before renewing bushes and stuff. if its a new thing and you have not been messing with the axles then the sivals should be ok ( unless they are leaking a lot?)

I've had wheel bearings go before on the 200 and its not them. It begins at 50mph and there is no noise as such just the whole body begins to shake.

That said I was under there inspecting the welding and I noticed that one of my rear bearing seals is leaking. I may have to get the hub off and replace it and the will do bearings at the same time. Would this accout for my vibration at 50mph because its the rear?

It shouldn't do unless the wheel bearing is knackered.

I was close on this one. was a few pints of water on the inside of the wheel. kinda makes sense as at a lower speed the water would stay at the bottem until it picks up speed and swings round with the wheel. however I would like to know if 300 wheel bearings do have a front and rear seal. we tried the front seal and it just dident look or feel rite so we took it off and it was smooth..

They just have the rear hib oil seal and the dust cap (dependent on vehicle age on the front)
