Title: How much for a gear knob and gaiter?
Post by: gords on April 01, 2005, 22:39:52
The gear knob has lost it's thread and is currently rammed on over an amount of tape wrapped around the gearstick. Also, the gaitor is well past it's best.

So, what should I expect to pay for new ones and for good quality second hand ones?

I've seen sets on ebay but they seem to fetch a premium price. I've been looking for a handbrake gaiter for months as the surround where it clips to the console has broken in two places.

On the 200tdi the top of the gear knob comes off with a bolt a bit lower down. Can't you areldite it in place? Then take it off at the bolt if you need to remove it.

Yes, I think mine used to bolt together halfway down ... but the previous owner had bodged a weld which gave me a very annoying rattle for the first few weeks :x  It's properly welded now :)

I suppose I could gllue the gear knob on - but the gaitor needs replacing as well, so I thought I'd do the lot. Not that it's desperate though!

I've had good results by searching ebay for "breaking discovery", they aren't really legit auctions but they normally say "don't bid call xxxx for info"

I reckon a £10 should get you one.

Try

or

or do a search there are always a few on there and worth givnig the guys on there a call - I think they caught on that its a good way to get 'free' adverts
