Title: D2 speedo pickup - where is it/ what type?
Post by: Saffy on September 24, 2009, 16:39:34
Hi,
I have a LT230 transfer box here that came from TD5 D2 (41D SUFFIX) hoping to mate to my defender (it has the difflock stud fitted but wasn't hooked up on the d2).  Where the speedo drive would normally be fitted on box there is just a recess cast into the case (a blank hole if you like). .... so what type of drive would it have had and where would the pick up have been ?

The D2 speedo is driven by a signal from the BCU.  There are no mechanics involved.

Ok... so does anyone know if the rear output shaft on this box still retained speedo gear ring? Thinking about swapping the rear housing for one that's got the orifice to fit the mechanical speedo gear, but pointless if they ditched the ring it picks up from.

The answer to that would be no as I have had a looksee, no gear on the shaft (oh how landrover like to lose money by make the exact same things twice), I mean they left the difflock mechanism and stub in there but unused  :doh:
Anyway no worries the whole rear shaft housing swaps over with a housing complete with shaft of one fitted with mechanical speedo pickup - same housing right back to LT230 on 200tdi. I fitting this disco box to a 300tdi defender so beign able to have the speedo dirve has helped a lot.

Right I'm off back into the round headlamp sections of this forum  =;
