how do you recognise when a cv joint is on the way out? my 1990 disco started making a funny noise today on my way home from shooting this morning, sort of a metallic clatering like something dragging on the road.
got home had a look underneath saw nothing out of place so went to move it and its locked up-wont move forward or reverse! left and went in to watch end of the GP on telly and have a bacon buttie the wife had cooked :D
came out let handbrake off and tried again this time she moved but under protest so i could get it off the road
stripped out the handbrake and removed the mud :oops: lubed up the linkage and refitted surely thats the prob :)
drove down road to check all seems ok then turning round at the end i get a clattery noise from the front
jack up and check the front axle, this time found both sets of brakes worn out :oops:  that will be the sand at slindon i suspect, and noticed the LH front hub is a lot harder to turn than the right it almost has a notchy quality to it-unless its on either lock then its the same as the other one
is this a sign of the cv on its way out? dont know whether to pull it to bits now and have a look , any suggestions

Could be a wheel bearing.  Is there any heat associated with the wheel ?

A CV will normally 'click' on steering lock when it is on the way out, the notchiness could be wheel bearing or CV.

In any case, by the sound of it the vehicle doesn't want to go far, so I'd just get it stripped and see what you can find.

just been out playing with it again and it does indeed make a clicking sort of noise when on full lock but i only got it to do it once then nothing looks like it will be strip out day tomorrow then :(

well i seem to have found the problem!
lucky i have a week off(yea right) so i have time to fix it.
top tip, use your small son as a second pair of ears drive slowly with him hanging out the window listening saying" its making a crunchy sound dad" :shock:
stripped out the hub after brekkie and this is what fell out

well the local landy man had all the stuff on the shelf so i have done the job and hey presto no crunchie noises any more :lol:

I don't wish to sound nasty, but from the photo if that "fell out" why isn't it black, shiny and covered in oil ?

it wouldnt be black and covered in oil as its sealed in from the oil but it should have had grease on it
