Title: Mounting the relay unit for a winch
Post by: weeone on October 07, 2009, 10:35:55
I'm fitting a winch to my disco (300tdi, with 200tdi engine), and I'm wondering about mounting places for the control/relay unit.

I'd rather not fit it on top of the winch, as this is (a) very public, and (b) restricts the airflow through the radiator & intercooler

I've a busy engine bay (second battery, 200tdi air-filter, 300tdi screenwash bottle; 300tdi fuse-box, ARB compressor, peddles) so I was wondering: why can't I mount it where the aircon pump would go?

Would the engine-shake damage the relays?

I realise I would need to open the bonnet to plug the wander-lead in, but that's possibly a good thing (and the wander-lead can be fed out under the bonnet anyway)

Thoughts?

You'd be better to mount it to the inner wing somewhere if you don;t want it on the front of the truck, i wouldn't mount it on the engine, the leads to/from would be constantly flexing, which i wouldn't be happy with....... i mounted my soleniod pack behind the grill, and then put the plug in the face of the grill.......

Both inner wings are full..... hence the need to place it elsewhere.

Maybe an Albright solenoid pack is the way forward: solid state & much smaller than the 4-solenoid pack I currently have :)

i can get you N/O or N/C contactors with rubber buttons and emergency stops if you want. all you would need to do is find a box to fit them in and you could mount it all in/around your dash.

You need:
200tdi; 200 tdi radiator & intercooler & frame; all the pipes between engine & the outside world; 200tdi exhaust..
... and engine mounts from a 200tdi chassis (that's the hard part)

Other than that, it basically plumbs in. You can lose half the wiring loom, keep the 300tdi alternator (35amp extra ;-) )

Oh... and you need the 300 temperature sensor, so you need to drill & tap a 200 one to act as a sleeve

(I'll do photos sometime)

How about an Albright with a Wireless Remote (http://www.winch-it.com/remote.htm)?
As Ron suggested, you could also run a cable with the normal remote plug into the grill and mount it there for any long pulls.
