Title: Retaining a private plate ?
Post by: marjan on October 10, 2009, 16:38:23
I want to put my Shogun up for sale soon but want to keep the private plate that came with it when I bought it.

I understand that I have to fill in a form and pay a fee to retain the reg number but how do I then get a year appropriate normal plate (1996-N) for the car ?

The DVLA will put the original N Plate back on.

All included in the cost of retention,

Your original/age related plate will be given to you with a cert. to get number plates made while you wait for your new V5c

You send the tax disc off and they send another with the new number on.

Unless you go to your local office where they will do it all over the counter.

The DVLA will put the original N Plate back on.

Not neccessarily - in 9 out of 10 cases the above is the case but not always!

Other way around!

Even if it is a private plate and you dont want it I would still say get it taken off the Shogun and sell it seperatly. wont cost you much in the long run. Every little helps.

I transfered my reg off my rover recently and I thought knowing DVLA it would be a nightmare but it was very easy for a change

It's only worth keeping it if it is worth (in the real world) £150 or more, as it is going to cost you £80 to transfer it off, £25 to retain it and then £25 for a pair of plates to put the old N reg back on.

If it is an NI plate with three letters and four numbers, then don't bother, they are worth next to nothing.

Yep that's what I thought as it is a NI plate.
