Any one got a rear worklamp fitted with a replacement LED(s) bulb? my lamps got a H3 TYPE Halogen but I can get single or multi LED replacement (about 10-15 quid) but wondering if the light output is good enough for a worklamp? Lamp will be used to illuminating the area behind door (cooking shelf),for camp set up in dark, and it's also wired as an additional reverse lamp. It runs off an aux battery. Would be nice to have low power consumption so it can be left on for long period.

Cant say I have tried it on a work light, but I have swapped to LED for my inspection lamps.
I find that the LED gives a less bright, but more diffused light, with little range (say 10ft). This could be OK for your scenario as I find that working under halogen/car headlight type light is problematic, wiht your back to the halogen light you get a lot of shadows so cant see what you are in front of. Facing the light you get dazzeled so end up looking down all the time! It also ruins any night vision so you end up either being able to see something that is intesley lit, or not at all.
I think that the more diffused, softer LED light my be better for those reasons, but can promise it as it may well depend on the individual reflector setup and positioning of light.

Led bulbs are not up to what you get out of a halogen H3 (at the moment) but they are good enough to use for the purpose of a work lamp. I created some using some mr16 uits from http://www.ultraleds.co.uk (idea came from X-lite concept) they are tiny lamps but produce a lot of light but only where you need it, These little lamps are fitted on series wing mirror mounts which allows them to be used at the rear or the side of the vehicle (useful when parking next to a fence in a dark ally)

I don't think you'll ever get an LED to replace an H3 directly - the reflector focused on an H3 capsual just won't be compatable with an LED. Replace the whole lamp though and there is bound to be something rather impressive just around the corner if not out already - LEDs are progressing as fast as computers these days, in fact I'd say more like computers 10 years ago as computers seem to age quite well now unless your use really demanding programs. A 1 year old LED looks pritty poor next to the latest stuff.
